Filip Benkovic: Leicester City recall Croatia centre-back from Cardiff loan

BBC Sport - Football

Wednesday 6th January 2021

Leicester City have recalled centre-back Filip Benkovic from his loan spell at Cardiff City.

The Croatia international joined the Bluebirds in October on what was meant to be a season-long loan but he has had little opportunity to make an impression with the Championship club.

The 23-year-old has only made one substitute appearance for Cardiff.

That was as a replacement for captain Sean Morrison during the 2-1 defeat at bottom side Wycombe Wanderers.

Benkovic joined Leicester for a reported fee of £13m in August 2018 from Dinamo Zagreb.

Last season he was loaned to Bristol City and also spent time at Celtic in the 2018-19 campaign.

So Leicester have recalled him back, leaves a bit short now.The team was crying out for changes and and he should have had his chance.
Hey ho.

Sorry only seen your post as I put mine up.

Should have been given a chance. Now we've got 2 injured CB's and Bamba who has looked well off the pace since his injury.

Re: Benkovic recalled

Honestly if Neil Harris had the ability to actually manage a team and realised that there needed to be a change at the back and PLAYED Benko, he wouldn't have been recalled.

"Yeah but what about the 5 wins in a row? You cant change a winning team!" - We are way beyond those 5 wins and Harris has had plenty of opportunities to try a new approach to games. Instead all he does is copy and paste the back 5 from the previous game.

Ciaron Brown surely has to be coming back now. Not that I think he is the answer but purely for numbers if Flint is out.

I would guess that in the same way that Bacuna has had to cover at right back that Cunningham will be required to cover at centre back.

Whichever way you look at it it's not ideal.

You do all know that Leicester have a few injuries themselves and he's been called back as cover.

I'm pretty sure that when Cunningham signed we were told that he was a left back who could also play on the left of a centre back pair, maybe I was wrong, we haven't seen too much of him.

Exactly what i said was going to happen, but the usual certain posters said no way.

Why would they leave him at Cardiff if we were never going to play him???

Agreement has already been done for him to go to another club from Leicester.

Maybe Harris will also go soon. :ayatollah:

There is potential for this season to be a complete cluster f**k!

Re: BREAKING:' FILIP BENKOVIC '

The bottom line is that Harris is culpable for the make up of our squad and HOW IT IS USED. He has made (IMO) some incredibly sh#tty decisions
... Wilson on the wing
... Persevering with Bacuna at right back
... Bennett in poor form/not persevering with Bagan
... Playing Pack with Ralls & Vaulks (no creativity!)
... Not trying Benkovic when he could have moved Nelson to RB and Bacuna back into midfield

Now we're left with what at CB? Nelson & Bamba and an unfit Flint who we didn't want anyway. Harris's mismanagement beggars belief.

Time for him to go. NO, it's WAY PAST time ... he should have been fired after the Coventry match.
I'm seething Harris is still here :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

If anything shows us up as a leaderless, drifting club, it is the appalling transfer/player dealings.

Don't go throwing Wilson and Moore at me, as good as they can be, people at the club seem to think individual one off players can make a massive difference.

We buy at over inflated prices, we buy injury prone players, we buy with our fingers crossed, and then we buy and don't play the player.

Something is going on at the club and I don't like it.

A few of us have said on here that if we don't play Benkovic Leicester will recall him in January just as we are starting to get injuries which is exactly what has happened. Absolutely appalling management on Harris's part. No one can tell me that a player who was very good for both Celtic and Bristol City cost £13 million and is. Croatian international is worse than Nelson. For me dreadful management and another reason Harris should go.

You know what this is unbelievable even by the low standards I hold Harris and the board by. We bring him in and pay his wages, don’t use him once and then when two or three of our centre backs are injured he goes back! Honestly have to laugh at these clowns

Re: BREAKING:' FILIP BENKOVIC '

Wed Jan 06, 2021 3:19 pm

Also as Harris didn’t seem to fancy him looks like we might not get rid of Harris this month after all

Those 5 points pretty much sums up our downfall this season and is why I've completely lost faith in Harris this season. Add to those points his inability to change tactics to react/counteract a team.

Re: BREAKING:' FILIP BENKOVIC '

I wouldn’t be surprised if Harris didn’t have a say in his transfer here. Why sign someone on his salary and loan fee and not give him a chance?

Filip Benkovic: Leicester City recall Croatia centre-back from Cardiff loan

BBC Sport - Football

Off to Celtic , after sitting on our bench ,wonder if he's been tapped on the shoulder about a permanent move away in January,so keep your head down ?

There must have been a good reason why he wasn’t used before. Having seen his performance against Wycombe I can see why. Nowhere near physical enough for the championship in my opinion. We are short now though with Morrison injured and Bamba potentially going to Middlesborough.

Harris summer signings at little cost to the club have all done well Moore,Wilson,Ojo,Tutu and Phillips. The only failure has been Benkovic and you could see why he wasn’t being picked at Wycombe? When you compare his signings to Warnock’s big money failures,Harris has done well.Perhaps we should make him the Director of Football and bring in a coach like Bellamy to kick our players arses!

That little cost to the club is around 5 to 7 million for the year. Its hardly little cost.

Re: BREAKING:' FILIP BENKOVIC '

Hardly any of the goals weve conceded in the last 10 odd games have been the fault of our centre back pair, so why replace them?
Benkovic finally got his chance against Wycombe and showed us why he hadnt been picked.
Why cry about it?
