'Literally a free hit' - The Cardiff City transfer news that's got fans fuming as ex-Man City starlet Rabbi Matondo closes in on Stoke City move

Bluebirds fans aren't happy that Cardiff City have allowed the Wales international to join a Championship rival

Monday 3rd January 2020

Rabbi Matondo is on the brink of joining Stoke City.

The former Cardiff City academy star is understood to have agreed terms on a six-month loan with te Potters, having spent nearly two years at Bundesliga side Schalke.

Matondo arrived in Germany as one of Welsh football's brightest young prospects, having previously made a positive impression on academy chiefs at former club Manchester City, who poached the winger from the Bluebirds when he was just 15.

The Wales international then hit the headlines after news emerged that he was officially the fastest player on the books at the Etihad, outpacing even Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane.

However, the 20-year-old is believed to still have a great affinity with his home city, and many Cardiff fans, having seen their team turn in some poor performances in recent weeks, believe the winger would have helped strengthen City's attacking options.

Reacting to the news on social media, one fan said: "This was literally a free hit for Cardiff. He’s a local lad who loves the club, and we’d be able to help his progression whilst bringing an injection of pace we desperately need. Shame us fans see what the board never does!"

For what it's worth, there's little evidence of Cardiff showing any interest in the winger, with the club understood to be targeting a striker and a right-back in this window.

A deal taking Matondo to the Potteries is likely to be confirmed in the next 24 hours.

Be a bit ironic if we did sign him on loan and we had to pay a loan fee for a player Man City stole from us and made a 11 million profit within 18 months.

He has been very ordinary for his club in Germany think he as scored 2 goals in about 32 games and hardly any assists either, that is the reason they are willing to let him go on loan. One of those players who showed huge promise as a youth but has been proved to be a bit ordinary as he got older. Man City can't believe their luck. Pinch him from us for next to nothing sell him for twelve million quid and he turns out to be not that special.

I am not saying he is a bad player but he is certainly more West Brom or Stoke than Man City or Bayern Munich.

Seems to be a fair amount of upset City fans on Twitter regarding this. Personally, I've never been overly impressed with him from what I have seen. He certainly has pace, but always looks weak on the ball. However, a move to the Championship could help him develop that part of his game.

With so much of our style being physical though, I don't think we're the right team for him, nor is he the right player for us at the moment.

NH has Harry Wilson who he has turned into a league 1 player, why would Rabbi want to join us?

He left Cardiff under a dark cloud is agent advised him not to train just to force a move to Man City don’t think we was to happy about it so I wouldn’t have thought he would come back

Not obviously any better than Hoilett Ojo or Wilson. We are not missing out on much. If he hadn't played for our youth team we wouldn't be mentioning him. A future star who turned out to be a future journeyman who probably won't even make it at premier league level. Maybe an ok championship player but no more than that.

Perhaps it’s because we already have 5 wingers on our books and our priorities are a right back, Striker and perhaps a midfielder?

He forfeited his chance to wear a City shirt when he WALKED OUT on the club. Local hero my ads.

Edit: made the €€ before everyone knew he's average to poor a player so....

Perhaps he did the right thing seeing as career progression would halt due to lack of talent

Showing 'promise' does not a player make and his time in Deutschland hasn't shown anything positive; but could it just be he is a little homesick and a spell at his original club might be the topic he needs?

Don't know too much about him but the new manager might be able to get a tune out of him

Worth punt IMHO though :ayatollah:

I'm far from fuming. Less than impressive for Schalke, less than impressive for Wales.

If Stoke are the only team linked with him after he was apparently a target for United last summer, surely that screams volumes about how well he's doing..

Wouldn’t have him over what we have. Those are far from positions of weakness if all fit. Plenty of other places need strengthening .

Seen him play for Schalke a few times but did not impress. However, he is not helped by the fact that Schalke are so poor at the moment.

Plenty of speed but lacking end product?
Lots of potential?

I'll tell you why we haven't gone for him then, we already have that in Murphy!
If we can't get Murphy's all round game sorted, why would we bring in Matondo to do the same thing?

Take his Nationality out of the equation , would you still feel the same?
