Superb Sky Sports programme last night on Salford City

Thu Dec 31, 2020 8:59 am

Watch an excellent behind the scenes documentary on the running of a football club last night.

Cameras all access, signings, board meetings, new kit access, looking for a training ground, funds, youth set up.

Couple of things really struck me. Firstly when Neville said he wants an U-21 team to play their first team every week and beat them regularly.

Secondly, Phil Neville said when you own a football team, you become such a huge fan.

Answer to the first?, we don't have enough youth tem players to form a good enough team,... and if we did it would end in a 0-0 draw.

Answer to the second?... Well Mr Tan, if you have any supportive feelings, a) show them and b) sell up.

BTW... Sales of Burnley and Derby going through well I see.

Supportive feelings like continuing to help fund us you mean - the operational basics need to just function as a football club?

And sell up to whom? Burnley and Derby may be going though but one is an established Premier League club with huge income streams and the other is...well a basket case. They may be great new owners...they may also be owners who choose to mortgage the club, invest less etc.

The point on youth is fair and is one that for the most part this club has got wrong for decades.

Agreed, even growing up in 70s you were much more likely to be scouted by Bristol Rovers than Cardiff.

It does seem that at least the infrastructure is here now, but we need to appoint someone who has experiencing in both spotting and developing the talent. I'm not sure it's there yet.

its how good/bad will the owners be .. are Burnley established ? 4th season in the prem { which is better than we have managed } but always one of half a dozen clubs you would not be surprised to be relegated....prior to that 2 single seasons at the top table since 1976....they play in an old ground with a small capacity that they do not fill....
