New Year Honours: Lewis Hamilton knighted
BBC Sport

Lewis Hamilton

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has been knighted in the Queen's New Year Honours list.

The Briton, 35, sealed a seventh drivers' title at the Turkish Grand Prix in November - equalling Michael Schumacher's championships record.

Hamilton won his first world title with McLaren in 2008, with further successes in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

He clinched a seventh world championship and became the most successful F1 driver ever when he won the Turkish Grand Prix in November 2020.

The Mercedes driver had already surpassed Schumacher's record number of race wins the previous month, with Hamilton's total now standing at 95.

After the Istanbul victory Hamilton said he felt like he was "only just getting started", adding: "To all the kids out there, dream the impossible."

He said he would "love to stay" in F1 and wanted to continue to campaign for change when it comes to human rights, diversity and environmentalism.

Incoming F1 chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali said: "Lewis is a true giant of our sport and his influence is huge both in and out of a car.

"What he has achieved is phenomenal, with still more to come. All of us at Formula 1 congratulate him on this well deserved recognition of his achievements and look forward to seeing more of his brilliance in 2021."

Several sporting names have earned their place on the honours list through charity work, with their contributions during the coronavirus pandemic recognised.

Rob Burrows

Rugby league legend Rob Burrow is made an MBE for services to rugby and his awareness campaign since being diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

Anne Keothavong

British Billie Jean King Cup captain Anne Keothavong also becomes an MBE.

The former British number one, 37, represented Great Britain in the event - previously known as the Fed Cup - before becoming captain in 2016.

Others made an MBE include former Tottenham and Chelsea striker Jimmy Greaves and ex-Wolves midfielder Ron Flowers, both World Cup winners with England in 1966.

Greaves, who later became a popular television personality, suffered a severe stroke in 2015 and his son Danny said of the MBE: "We are very, very proud of Dad. Always have been, always will be.

"At almost 81 to receive an honour from Her Majesty the Queen is just something very, very special."

Following rugby union side Exeter Chiefs' domestic and European titles last season, director of rugby Rob Baxter is made an OBE while captain Joe Simmonds becomes an MBE.

"I couldn't quite work out if it was real or whether it was spam or someone having bit of a prank," Baxter said of the moment he received the news.

"It turned up by email and not in an official letter. You download it, read it and check who it has been emailed from with a Google search.

"I was sat there with my wife, both of us in a slightly bemused state. My family are delighted."

Former England captain Gillian Coultard has been appointed an MBE for services to football, along with former Swansea City, Cardiff City and Wales forward Alan Curtis.

Chairman of the Racecourse Association Maggie Carver has been made a CBE, as has former jockey Bob Champion and chief executive and secretary of the R&A Peter Dawson.

Promoter Barry Hearn becomes an OBE for services to sport, having been involved in boxing, snooker and darts among other sports.

"It has been a great joy to be involved in such a wide range of sports for over 40 years," said Hearn.

"To be recognised for that work is an honour."

Former Rugby Football League chairman, ex-Football Association chief executive and former BBC head of sport Brian Barwick, now chairman of football's National League, receives an OBE.

Meanwhile, Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby chair Kevin Aitchison is made an MBE, and footballer-turned-boxer Curtis Woodhouse is among those to receive the British Empire Medal (BEM).

Also recognised for his charity work is former jockey Bob Champion, who fought cancer to win the Grand National in 1981.

The 72-year-old has been made a CBE for his work with the Bob Champion Cancer Trust, which he founded two years after his fairytale win.

"I'm so proud," Champion said. "But really it's for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust, and all the people involved in it. The award is for them really not just me."

In rugby union, former player Matt Hampson has been appointed an OBE after founding the Matt Hampson foundation.

The 36-year-old was paralysed from the neck down in 2005 following an accident in training and set up his foundation to offer support to others who have suffered catastrophic sporting injuries.

The blokes an idiot I thought you had to have a personality to win “Sports Personality” of the year.

Makes me laugh when they have the driver of the day during F1 he never comes in the top 3 even if he’s driven exceptionally. Hardly anyone likes him.
Make him drive in another car to prove he’s as brilliant as he thinks he is.

Sincere congratulations to former Bluebird and Swansea player (later coach) Alan Curtis on his MBE

A genuinely nice guy who successfully crossed the divide and helped the Bluebirds to promotion in 1988 :bluebird:

I have always thought that honors were for people who dedicated their lives to helping others, not jumped up pop stars and people doing a profession that has nothing to do with any good, apparently not. The honors list should have been done away with years ago, as now it is just a perk for all the luvies etc.

I agree.I work at a local food bank in Newport.
I had to stay at home in the first wave through age and asthma.
There's this guy 55 retired nurse worked everyday through the pandemic in the foodbank. He should get the knighthood.
It makes me sick.

Mate of mine who spent his life in the public sector got an MBE about 20 years ago, few days after, on the way to an Old Firm Game, he put a bottle through a Celtic supporters bus and tried to pull a big fat Bheast out or it. Always remember his brother going nuts and shouting at him “you’re an MBE Furfuxsake”

I always respected Hamilton as an excellent driver in a very dangerous sport, but since his latest shenanigans of supporting a marxist organisation, who quite frankly don't give a f**k about the colour of anyone's skin, just about political gain, I've lost total respect for the guy.

But hey ho, I guess he's used to getting down on one knee.....it wouldn't upset me too much if our sovereign forgot to lift the sword and just went from side to side. :bluebird:

The ironic thing is he is a multi millionaire dodging paying tax by living in Monaco (apparently not a bar to receiving a knighthood) yet he is the most visible supporter of an organisation that wants to destroy global capitalism and redistribute his own wealth. Great driver and complete idiot.

Just watched the BBC lunchtime news.

Featured Alan Curtis - Not a mention that he played for Cardiff City (and a great player he was too).

It is annoying that the BBC publicly funded by us all (including myself) either:

Lazy journalism not even researching his career as a footballer OR As people on here have suggested in the past, the BBC Sports room is majority Swans Fans (great considering it's broadcasts are from a Cardiff HQ) so Cardiff do not get a mention.

I do believe in paying my TV (BBC) license fee because of the way it is funded but the bloated coffers of the BBC with only a handful of productions value for money and so many X list talent less celebrities being paid gross wages, etc - The sooner it goes to either Advertisement or pay Tv (eg, netflix) and we all get a REAL choice, the better.

It (Alan Curtis playing so successfully for the Bluebirds) wasn't mentioned in the article either, so I corrected the factual content ;)

Exactly. Lewis is happy to race in Bahrain which has an appalling record on human rights but tub thumps to the average brit over race relations. Lewis also does not pay his fair share of tax to this country even though it wouldn't hurt his lifestyle if he did. Hamilton dosnt seem to realise those taxes could help pay for hospitals/schools/community centres for poor people from the ethnic backgrounds he champions.

I'm also delighted for Lewis Hamilton and whatever your views on his position on things like Black Lives Matters you simply cannot take away the fact that he has proved himself to be the best driver of all time in his chosen sport of F1.

Hes normally drove the fastest car, which helps in a car race. In the last race a total rookie took Hamilton's place (george Russell?) and was miles clear and would've won if he hadn't had a puncture.

Russell had drove 38 formula one races and hadn't gained a podium place once. He drove Hamiltons car once and would've won easily bar for the misfortune of getting a puncture. Make of that what you will.
