Bolton eyeing loan move for ex-Sunderland, Cardiff City and Rangers star Declan John as Swansea City exit draws near
The full-back has been frozen out at the Liberty Stadium and has already been told he can leave South Wales
Bolton Wanderers are eager to sign Declan John on loan from Swansea City.
The Wales international has been frozen out at the Liberty Stadium and was told by Steve Cooper that he could leave the club in the summer.
However, John failed to secure a move away from Swansea and is now in the final year of his deal with the club.
He has been playing for the Swans’ Under-23s and recently scored in a 3-2 Professional Development League defeat to Watford’s young guns at Landore.
And it’s understood League Two outfit Bolton are keen to add a left wing-back to their ranks in the January transfer window, with John being a man who features on their wish list.
Reports suggested Swansea have turned down a bid from the Trotters, although WalesOnline understands that Bolton would be more likely to want to sign John on a temporary basis.
They are currently under a transfer embargo until May.
“We made it clear that he was able to go and play elsewhere, so I guess that’s still the case at the moment,” Cooper said in late November when asked about John’s situation.
“Not until the window opens back in January can anything be done.”
John joined Swansea from Rangers during the 2018 summer transfer window but has made just 18 appearances in all competitions for the club.
He joined Sunderland on loan in January but failed to make a single appearance for the Black Cats.
His current Swansea deal expires next summer.
When asked about John in a press conference, Evatt responded: "I’m not going to speak about players and targets until we’ve got them over the line and that’s as far as it goes and as much as I want to say on it."
