Two Cardiff City players who’ll surely be eyeing an exit as soon as next week

By Jordan Rushworth

27/12/2020

Cardiff City have endured a mixed start to their Championship campaign, with the Bluebirds having got off to a slow start but having shown some signs of recovering their form over the last few months.

Neil Harris’ side will be targeting another top-six finish, but they will need to find a little more consistency in their form and performances to make that possible.

The Bluebirds perhaps suffered a bit of a hangover from their defeat to Fulham in the play-off semi-finals, but they made some good signings in the summer and should be there or thereabouts at the end of the campaign.

January will be a crucial month for Cardiff, with Harris’ side potentially needing to add a little more quality to the squad in order to help see them over the line.

However, there are some players who are on the fringes of their squad that might also be looking to earn a move away from the club.

Here then, we take a look at TWO Cardiff players who will surely be eyeing up a January exit…

Josh Murphy

One Cardiff player who could be considering his future at Cardiff is Josh Murphy, with the winger having fallen far down the pecking order this season since the arrivals of the likes of Harry Wilson and Sheyi Ojo in the summer. The 23-year-old has not shown many signs of late that he can come back into contention.

Murphy has been limited to just three starts in the Championship so far this campaign and that shows how far down the pecking order he has fallen.

The winger is a player with plenty of potential and quality when he is on his best form, but he lacks consistency and although he was involved in eight league goals last term, he was only able to make 16 starts in the league (Sofascore).

Quiz: Did these 20 things happen to Cardiff City in 2020?

It does look like a move away might be best for Murphy to go and become a key figure in a side once again, and he is the sort of player that needs the full faith of his manager to get the best out of him.

Harris just does not appear to fancy him for whatever reason, and a January exit might be the best for both parties.

Filip Benkovic

Another player that will surely be wanting to find a new challenge in January is Filip Benkovic, whose loan move from Leicester City to Cardiff in the summer has not really worked out for the defender.

The 23-year-old impressed out on loan at Bristol City last season in his ten appearances, but he has not had the chance to make a mark by Harris.

Leicester will likely be considering whether it is better to recall him and send him out on loan elsewhere, with the defender now far down the pecking order with the Premier League club.

He is yet to make an appearance for Cardiff in the Championship and it is clear he would only play if there were injuries or suspensions.

From Cardiff’s perspective, they would be hoping to keep him around the squad for cover in their squad. However, Benkovic is unlikely to be wanting to sit on the bench for the rest of the campaign and you could see him asking for another move in January.

We will have to pay Murphy's contract up, no club is going to pay a fee for him.

I agree, Murphy has cost us a fortune and still is.

Maybe City will do a deal with him as he has failed to really shine at Cardiff.

Agreed.

The only thing he does consistently is fail.

Time to go I think even if it costs us to pay him off it would be cheaper than his wage.

Quiet news day obviously. When will journos understand that players going within contract requires some other club to want them and willing to take over their wage and/or the player willing to sacrifice money they are contractually entitled to?

I just have a feeling that if he does go, he will do well elsewhere :(

I'm not sure if Murphy is homesick or simply not a good fit on the style we play; and when you think about it, some of our biggest disappointment in recent years (post Malky) have been those so-called 'flair' players and Booby Decordova-Reid was the previous example

It's a conundrum for the club, as there is clearly a decent player inside Murphy and I can't help but think he had had a little bit of a raw deal under Neil Warnock (plus his injury)

You never know but I can't see him going before the summer

Equally, I can't see Benkovic going back either; I think Neil Harris appreciates him, has been upfront and knows we need him in the squad

Benkovic will get his chance (hopefully tonight) and I have a feeling will grab that chance with both hands :ayatollah:

One worth 15 million
The other we paid 12 million
We don't need
i wonder if we can bring in that sort of value in january

Tonight Chris? ;)

With regards to Murphy, I’m sick of the guy and the chances he’s had.

I disagree about having a raw deal because when he’s been given his chance during the Warnock era and since he’s constantly failed.

Most players would be and should be busting a gut when they’re given more chances but Murphy just has no zip about him to try.
I definitely agree he can play and like Reid I can see him doing well elsewhere when he goes. I just hope he goes sooner rather than later.
A waste of talent.
As ever, if he gets another chance against Wycombe - tomorrow night ;) - I hope he shines and proves me and thousands wrong!

Ha Ha! Paul, my head thinks it's Tuesday and yesterday was the Bank Holiday!

Respect your view, as always and you're likely right. I always like to give a player the benefit in the hope they'll come good

It's a tough one to know what goes on behind the scenes; but I always felt Warnock was harder on some players than others during his tenure and (from the outside) Murphy seems to be one of those that copped it most

 Don’t worry you’re not the only one!

I think you’re right and Warnock with all his experience and man management skills gave him a kick up the arse on several occasions.
I think with Murphy, he just sulked even more than usual.

It’s no coincidence that Harris rarely starts him and I wouldn’t be surprised if Murphy angling to get out with a fresh start somewhere else.

That would make complete sense; and I've stated on here before that Murphy was one of three (Cunningham and Reid being the others) who were read the Riot Act by Warnock for destabilising the squad with their 'Gang of 3' antics

I am told that was the reason Reid was so suddenly allowed to go, why Cunningham was shipped out on loan and left Murphy being told to 'buck up his ideas' as the only one of the three to stay

Maybe residue from that but a different manager should have given Murphy a new opportunity to impress; something I admit, is a rare event so far... :(

its a football league world article they churn out this stuff at the same rate Mr Kipling churns out cakes and Neil Harris churns out excuses... its never the same journo either so not sure if they have a huge turnover or just allow anyone to have a go....
