A few of us from Ely went to that County v Workington match, some time later they held a match at Ninian park between a South Wales side (city, county and jacks players) versus man utd to raise money for county. Funny that there was hardly any animosity between us and county back in those days, that changed a fair bit in later years.

Are we mixing the seasons up. Willie Brown had long gone so I'm wrong about that however
In the 1970–71 season the Newport team managed by Bobby Ferguson set an unwanted Football League record by not winning any of their first 25 matches, losing 21 in the process.[10] In the same season Newport equalled the worst defeat of a Football League club by a non-league club when they lost 6–1 to Barnet in the FA Cup First Round. Results improved in the following season under Billy Lucas in his third spell as manager and in the 1972–73 season Newport missed out on promotion only on goal average.
For the 1976–77 season the team managed by Jimmy Scoular changed their playing strip to light blue and white striped shirts, light blue shorts and white socks akin to the Argentina national team in an attempt to turn around their fortunes. However, the team continued to struggle until Colin Addison took over in January 1977. The season became known as "the great escape" as County avoided relegation with a 1–0 win at home to Workington in the last game of the season.[11

City were away at Bolton in the mid seventies and the game was called off due to the weather just as we got near Bolton, so a few hundred of us went to Rochdale to see them playing Workington, we were all behind the goal cheering for Workington, their players were looking bemused at their unexpected away following. Workington won the game 3-1, their first and only away win that season, their goalie even shook hands with some of us at the final whistle.

This is correct![]()
County last requested 're-election' in 1932 and lost the vote; only to be re-elected the following season
Many will be confused by the real 'Newport County' being thrown out of the league in 1988; only to rise again through the massive efforts of a small number of dedicated supporters and 25 years later Back in the EFL

I used to have an old Workington programme from that season which mentions that!

I'm from the Rhymney valley, but worked in Newport for a while. So I used to go to see Cwnty now and again. I was there that night and it was great to be part of it all. I think they called it 'The Great Escape'. I also watched them beat West Ham in the FA cup - great nights.
