Nathaniel Mendez-Laing gets Cardiff City Christmas present three months after being sackedBy Jon DoelNathaniel Mendez-Laing's Cardiff City career came to a crashing end, but his Christmas present this year would please many Bluebirds fansSacked Cardiff City star Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has shared a special Bluebirds-themed Christmas present he received just over three months after being axed by the club.
The 28-year-old was given a mug emblazoned with a BBC Ceefax report of the Bluebirds' final match of the 2018/19 Premier League season, in which Mendez-Laing scored two goals in a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The stunning performance was arguably the best of the entire campaign under Neil Warnock, with Mendez-Laing scoring a goal in either half on May 12, 2019.
The mug features the headline,
"Cardiff City heap more misery on Manchester United", along with all the match details from that memorable day.
Mendez-Laing, who became a father for the first time in 2020, remains without a club following his controversial and unexplained exit from Cardiff in September.
Last month he was pictured training with Karin Benzema's fitness coach in Dubai, sparking suggestions he could be preparing for a football comeback in 2021.
The winger left the Bluebirds back in September due to what the club described at the time as a
"serious breach of contract".
The player's exit sent a shockwave through the club when it was announced, and there are still precious few public details over the circumstances around his departure.
Mendez-Laing's one and only statement about the incident was posted on behalf of his representatives FifteenEleven Management shortly after his release was confirmed.
It read:
"Following on from [Wednesday's] announcement that I have left Cardiff City FC, I would like to place on record my thanks to the fans for the support they have shown me over the past three years.
"I will be making no further comment at this time."
