Harris says we can’t compete with these clubs, even better

Sat Dec 26, 2020 10:23 am

MY VIEW:
Well for me Brentford, Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich are way smaller clubs than us and we inky came down from the Prem 18months ago, I grew up looking at these clubs as minute clubs compared to us
Norwich yes are bigger than the others but not us.
If this is Neil Harris belief then we are not going forward but backwards

Cardiff City boss Neil Harris reckons Norwich City are "a cut above" the rest of the Championship - and believes they are even better than Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United of last season.

Cardiff he says can’t compete with the likes of clubs like Norwich, Brentford are very similar to Norwich Harris says.

Saturday 26th December 2020

The Bluebirds boss was discussing their Boxing Day clash against Brentford, another team which Harris reserved special praise for.

The Bees, like Norwich and Leeds, like to make the ball do the work on the pitch and have produced some good football over the past few seasons, and Cardiff will have their work cut out when Thomas Frank's men arrive in the Welsh capital today.

Leeds gained automatic promotion to the Premier League last season by being crowned Championship champions, and despite a 6-2 mauling against Manchester United last weekend, they have been widely praised for their displays in the top flight.

But Harris picked out the Canaries - who comprehensively beat the Bluebirds 2-0 last weekend - as the best team his side have faced in recent times.

NEIL HARRIS:

Asked if playing the west Londoners will be like facing Norwich, Harris said: "Yes, a well-rounded team, Brentford, how they progressed over the last three or four years, they've been a good footballing side.

"A team that are on a long unbeaten run at the moment, in good form for getting through to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.

"We’re mindful of that and we have to be at our best, we have to be better than we were at Norwich.

"I think Norwich, from what I saw the other day, are a cut above in the league this year. I thought they were better than Leeds last year. The praise that Leeds took last year was immense - I think Norwich are better from what I’ve seen, watching them at the weekend but also watching their previous five games.

"We know Brentford are going to be a good side as well. We’ve seen Stoke recently, Watford recently, good sides.

"What I expect is my group, after a week’s - I wouldn’t say refreshment, from a busy schedule - but having a quieter week, I expect to see more legs in my team this week."

Harris feels it is unfair to compare his side, or any others in the Championship, to the likes of Norwich, Watford or Bournemouth who were all relegated from the Premier League last term.

Their strong squads, coupled with the impact of coronavirus, has left them in better positions than those who were in the second tier last season.

"I don't think you can compare us to Norwich," he said. "I think it’s unfair to compare anybody in the division to Norwich, Watford and Bournemouth, we just can’t compete with their budgets and squads.”

"None of them lost many players coming out of the Premier League last year, I think they probably would have all expected to lose more players, other than financial constraints due to Covid.

"So I don’t think anyone can compare to them. They are good sides with a very healthy squad.

"Swansea were better than us on the day, granted. We were better than Stoke and beat them, obviously played very well at Watford to win the game. I think a lot of those teams have been more consistent than us over the course of the season from day one. That’s obvious with the points totals."

Despite defeat to Norwich and Swansea in recent weeks, Harris has staged a mini-turnaround at Cardiff City Stadium, recording five wins in the past seven games. That, in anybody's book, is promotion form, and the manager believes there is more to come from his charges.

"Yes [there is more to come]," he said.

"There does need to be more to come. Certainly, consistency is key. But also when I look back at Saturday and however good Norwich were, we looked leggy, certainly watching it back. My assumption after the game was correct, it looked like a game too far for us.

"When I take Kieffer Moore, Lee Tomlin, Joe Bennet and Jordi Osei-Tutu - four players all with fantastic attributes - out of my team, then there’s going to be a bit of a gulf between the very, very best in the division.

"Getting everybody fit over the coming weeks will be vital for us to improve.

"Certainly, consistency will be key for us in the second half of the season, as it was last year."

Unfortunately for us, this basically sums up Neil Harris’s mindset, negative and excuses.

He didn’t say we can’t compete with Brentford he said the Premier League sides who came down.

He is right. The teams who came down had their teams pretty much left in tact from their relegation. Watford and Bournemouth had been premier league for a while.

However, Norwich had one season in the premier league. True that they have largely kept their squad but he’s not been there that long. The reason they are so good is simply excellent management. He has put together a class side.

Seems weird that 2.5 years ago we were buying one of Norwich’s best performers in Murphy.

If he said opposite people will be calling him delusional? Despite what people say the relegated teams have far better squads kept their players and have ability to buy players in January! Yes we had same ability previously but thats another story.

Way to go Neil Harris!

Obviously when his time as a "manager" is up it's clear he has a lucrative career ahead as a motivational speaker.

I'm hoping these comments are some sort of reverse psychology as otherwise he needs to have a look in the mirror, have a serious word with himself and admit that he is out of his depth.

At the biggest club in Wales he needs to understand and try to comprehend the size of the following. The belief and pride our fanbase has. Expectations after the last few years have quite rightly risen yet passion, fight and commitment will always be applauded.

I'm with Forever Blue on this, we are bigger than the teams in the Championship. This season we have had considerable financial backing. We should be contending for automatic promotion.

Sadly, as much as I will always back our manager, I'm afraid I'm getting more and more worried, concerned and disillusioned not only in NH constant diatribe of excuses, his seriously poor tactical awareness and now this undermining of CCFC...

A switched on motivational leader he most definitely is not.

If by some chance we happen to get promoted I cannot envisage him as a Prem manager.

We are Cardiff.

Is that what he said?...........

BLIMEY we’ve got a second rate manager and he needs to be shown the door. I can’t believe VT would want to hear that.

18 months ago, in a more competitive Premiership and despite the Sala tragedy, we were 1 win away from survival, last season Norwich were one of the worst ever Premiership sides playing mid Championship level football. Us playing “do not lose” football will ensure mid table survival, is that Harris’s ambition?

Not really. Malky and Ole bought badly.

NW too.

It’s not about the players only. It’s about building a team capable of a) surviving in the premier league b) having a style of football that bridges the gap. Ideally you want both.

Both times we were promoted we didn’t accomplish either.

NW almost did. We were close to survival and Sala could have been the missing piece. Sadly we will never know. But he didn’t have funds to help.

Malky had funds. Not only to build a side but also to build a style that would help us push on. He had the money to. Sadly he wasn’t a good enough coach/manager to do it.

Norwich have built a style that although they didn’t stay up they come back to the championship and are light years ahead. If they go up back up (when) they will be a lot better prepared.

Imagine if Brentford had kept all the players they have had to sell?

Unreal or is he reflecting the boards view as well???
Shows a real lack of ambition ...lots of mates who support other clubs always say we r a Premier league size club interns of ground and support.
Always thought we were a similar size to Everton type of club as opposed to being below the Watford’s etc...

The difference between us and other teams promoted and relegated is we did not have a team capable of staying in premier league or was a team quickly put together that was as quickly disembled on relegation! Your right about building a team we have not done it once and this one will have same problem as previous ones ? Said before club needs a strategic plan of 3yrs to build a side capable iof promotion and have chance stay there this side like others got no chance of staying in premier league so cycle will continue.
And hes not 1st and certainly not last to make the comments he as..

Similar size to Everton?

Everton are closer to Barcelona than we are to Everton.

Other teams are short term in thinking too. But the only time I can remember any sort of long term plan was when Trollope was appointed. We are going to build a welsh side it was said based on the formation that worked for Wales.

Sadly after 11 games it wasn’t going well and he was sacked. Mostly because of a lack of patience from the fans.

You’re right, I can’t see anywhere where Harris has said the clubs mentioned are ‘bigger’ and us.

He’s saying we can’t compare with Norwich, Watford and Bournemouth with regards to being able to compete with their budgets and squads.

The last of the parachute payments so its going to get tougher if we don' t get ourselves in the mix
but if my manger said we are not good enough it would knock the stuffing out of me
I doubt you would hear warnock repeating what arris said
Brian clough was such a motivator his tactics
he used to say the people you see around you in this stadium they live here you are representing there homes Street's and every fibre of this city
"Now go out there and represent them"
Arris has an excuse lined up though
the fans are'nt here though
Just aswell for him .

Again putting words into his mouth.

It’s not saying we can’t compete with them. We beat Watford which he said. It’s that we can’t compete with the quality they have in their squad. And he said the three relegated teams too. It’s true we can’t really.

He is speaking the truth that is all.

Would he be slated if he said we cannot compete with Liverpool? It’s nothing to do with size of club, crowds it’s the fact that two of those three were in the premier league for a while. The third have spent money wisely and developed a really good squad.
