Neil Harris:
"You want a bigger squad but there isn’t any money, so you can’t let players go because other teams haven’t got money to pay for them, and you need to keep the players in the building but you can’t let players go unless you can get somebody in.“
Thursday 24th December 2020
Cardiff City boss Neil Harris has warned that clubs including the Bluebirds won't be spending money during the January transfer window.
The manager, preparing for a Boxing Day clash against Brentford, has already held talks with the club's Committee and owner Vincent Tan in recent days about the areas he would like to strengthen next month.
NEIL HARRIS:
"I spoke to the board, and spoke to Vincent himself as well a couple of times the last few days.
"I’ve told the board my thoughts and my views and I’ve said areas I think we need to address or strengthen, or players I think may want to go out and play some football, where we’d need to adapt.
"It’s still early days with that. They’re very supportive, listened and we discussed various players and various items and positions."
"I am already looking at loan players coming in to strengthen our squad and a few more players leaving."
"Just to reiterate balancing the books is just as vital at the moment."
Cardiff's activity in the transfer window will take into account whether players currently out injured will be fit or not, as well as potential player recalls to parent clubs and what Harris described as an "interesting" centre-half situation where Leicester loanee Filip Benkovic is yet to play a minute for the first team.
Talks have taken place behind the scenes with clubs and agents to get the ball moving but, as ever, before the window opens on January 1, there are no guarantees just yet.
"We’re going to be reactive but I have a picture in my mind where I’d like to strengthen the team," Harris said.
"As we know, not hitting January 1 yet, there’s a lot of people saying ‘somebody might be available, might not’.
"Are we going to get positive tests? Are we going to get injuries over Christmas?
"It’s the same scenario as every late December, start of January. A lot of ifs and maybes and then you put in the fact that there’s very, very little money within the game, Championship, League One, League Two in particular but the Premier League also.
"Everybody would do well to heed these words: very little money. So it’s not going to be people spending mega bucks including ourselves.
"You've got the Covid scenario as well, of people being a little bit afraid to let people go on loan until maybe fixtures start settling down, which they do come mid-January.
"Nothing is going to happen in the next seven days for something to be closer other than us just getting our ducks in a row as usual."
As for coronavirus, Harris believes it will certainly impact the transfer window - financially, primarily - and clubs could prove reluctant to let players go out on loan.
"If we’re going to be in a scenario where clubs are in and out of tiers and games are stopping and starting again and you lose three games in a row [postponed], you’ve got to fit those three games in somewhere, in February and March, or March and April.
"You could go Saturday to Tuesday all month, you need a squad again.
"I'd like to think we escaped pretty well during the December period, maybe not Norwich when we were extremely leggy and short of bodies, but even getting through Birmingham with limited numbers, but I think we got through the period well in December to get the five wins out of seven.
"If we had that period again I would like more strength in depth. If it means keeping players for that, then so be it.
"Covid is playing a massive thought process to everybody’s transfer window, us included.
"You want a bigger squad but there isn’t any money, so you can’t let players go because other teams haven’t got money to pay for them, and you need to keep the players in the building but you can’t let players go unless you can get somebody in.
"There’s a real honest and open and frank assessment of how I see and how I think most teams see it, and how it’s going to be."
It adds to the importance of the acquisition of the likes of Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson during the last transfer window.
"Players left the building and again we let Neil Etheridge and Callum Paterson go to balance the books to be able to bring in Harry Wilson and Kieffer Moore, and pretty much brought them in like for like financially," he said.
"They were very fortunate in the scenario that we had players to move on to bring in some more quality to the group.
"Even Benkovic coming in, OK he’s not appeared in the shirt yet, but he’s been pivotal in pushing the centre-halves in front of him and providing much-needed cover once Aden Flint went to Sheffield Wednesday."
While it was an important window, it shows the importance of the squad as a whole where reinforcements are needed.
"We’ve seen we missed six attacking players for one game against Birmingham, if we lost six defensive players for one game it would be all hands at the pump in that area as well.
"Trying to have a balanced squad is key, but again just to reiterate balancing the books is just as vital at the moment."
Predicting a transfer window like no other, Harris is set to resume talks with Cardiff's board around the game with Rotherham on January 2.
"It’s going to be a reactive market, I’ll pick it up with them probably just before Rotherham and just after Rotherham - the 72-hour period around that game."

Matthew John Harrop is a clever one.
He bought a striker. Sadly he ended up at the bottom of the sea.
He has also spent money in every transfer window he has been owner.

Ian exactly what I expected and Neil Harris was never going anywhere.
Harris is here no matter till May at least.
I personally dont blame them keeping Harris, he is a young Russell Slade and perfect for them.

We were the 4th highest spenders in the league and made 4 premier League loan signings, two of which are rated at over £35 million between them . This current squad this season cost over £50 million to assemble alone. It's not the owners fault that players sometimes don't live up to expectation.
People are so ungrateful to a guy who has spent over £200 million on players in 10 years.

But didnt you say the other day, you didnt want him sacked, and he deserves to see the season out annis?
I never expected there to be funds to spend in january,in fact I believe most clubs in this division and below, will be relying on the loan market,or small fees paid, that became obvious as the crowds were stopped attending, and many clubs,us included, have had to cut our cloth accordingly.
Id settle for two or three good loan players if we can,but its tough times for the vast majority of clubs imho.

To be fair, it wasn't "the other day", it was during the bad run when over 90% in the initial vote agreed it was 'time to go'
Neil Harris has since pulled it around big style and, Swansea loss apart, the team have performed in a winning way. The second 'vote' only a few days later showed how fickle us 'fans' are, as the ratio was a lot closer than before; and who said it wasn't a 'result' business?![]()
Annis has since said he believes nothing will change much this season behind the scenes, so Neil Harris should be given the opportunity to repeat last seasons heroics and then see where we are at the end of the season
My own view is 'jury out' but the signs are he (Harris) currently deserves the chance
