Favourite Cardiff manager

Annis says DJ was hated.

Let’s see who was liked more.

Malky or DJ.

I daresay this will be deleted or edited somehow.

Dave Jones. Enjoyable football, strikers that could score, midfielders that could pass, made players better here and took us to an FA Cup Final, Play Off Final and a Semi Final. I know for a lot of people its about the destination and thats fair enough but for me its about the journey, and i cant say the last 10 years of watching us has been particularly enjoyable even the 2 prem seasons. I know we bottled it under DJ when it really mattered but i loved the football and when going to games i always got excited to see us play and watch the likes of Michael Chopra, Jay Bothroyd, Ross McCormack, Craig Bellamy, Peter Whittingham, Chris Burke, Joe Ledley, Steve McPhail, etc. Think Malky did very well but always prefered the DJ era even if there were problems in certain areas.

Preferred malky in the way he was with the fans, but preferred the style of football in the DJ era, apart from when the team bottled it obviously

Malky was a winner, hence my vote for him versus Dave. All I want is to see the City win, however boring is their football.

Who was more successful and bonded with the fans, Malky for sure. I remember when he came, in his first season, I think we had 5 first team players? So to get promoted and reach the Carling Cup final under those circumstances was impressive.

Dave Jones, arrogant, even abusive towards the fans at times. But we played some great attacking football, and had some terrific flair players; Whitts, Koumas, Chopra, Bothroyd all spring to mind. I'm not sure we've even had a striker score more than 10 goals in a season since DJ? Maybe Moore will break that though.

If DJ had the same money Malky had he would have been very successful I think.

Would have got us up and stayed up.

Look what he did with 500k Chopra, 300k McCormack, 250k Johnson.

Whereas Malky spent 1.5 million Velikonja, 750k Miller, 500k Kiss.

Good point. Although one year we did sign Hasselbaink, Fowler and Sinclair. I'm not sure how they would have compared economically to Velikonja, Miller and Kiss though, as JFH, Fowler and Sinclair probably helped us sell more shirts etc.

Completely different types of manager though. Would love a combination of Warnocks togetherness and man management, with DJ's style of play.

Crazy year that was. FA Cup final year.

Jimmy Floyd was good for us I think. A lot of players around him seemed improve that year. Ledley and Whitts especially. Constant earache from JFH

Yeah what happened with Jimmy Floyd?

He seemed to want to stay. The next season we ended up signing Eddie Johnson and missed out on the play offs by 1 goal - many own goals or pen misses to chose from but EJ's one stands out for me as it was only 1 of 3 he actually put in the net haha.

He got a nice pay off too didn’t he?

I think his legs had gone by the end of the season.

Malky would get a performance from his side even if it was 10 men behind the ball for 90 minutes
DJ I hated the fact he never got animated on the sidelines,no passion unlike the fans
But with both we had some good times
I remember playing the wurzels under DJ early kick Sat my lad was playing in the morning so i was late. jogging down broad street somebody in a car shouted we were 2-0 down, by the time we got to the lights it was 2-1 went on to win 3-2
Malky carling cup final taking Liverpool to penalties so it’s Malky for me

Interesting outcome DJ did far better on the votes than I thought he would.

For me a Total failure, Nothing won in 6 years, was given an abundance of money to pay the highest wages in the Championship at that time, had class players beyond, yes great football, but won NOTHING.

His arrogance was beyond, laziness, players lost respect and DJ could not stand the fans.

Rem I sat in the same dressing room as DJ with the players there before some of the matches and saw everything.

6 years is a long time in management and We failed with all the biggest names.

Malky Mackay easily.

Malky is also my favorite of the last 20 years, I still believe he would have kept us up.

Malky took us to the higher level.
Just a shame about the issues he later had with Vincent Tan, which subsequently led to his removal.

Re: Favourite Cardiff manager

Malky....just had that rapport with the players and supporters....DJs team played more attractive footy but Malkys team seemed to have a harder edge and could play more than just front foot football....would grind out results when needed

Well done Malky.

It was pointed out to me that the votes for Malky all went on in clumps. Wonder what Trump would make of it.

Haha I just voted Malky but I don’t come on here much any more!

Well documented that DJ’s teams were more exciting but I much preferred MM.
He was more charismatic, a winner and took us to the Premier league end of.

I think you've been reading thomasblue's posts of late

If you posted something positive rather than nipping in and out with (deliberate IMHO) negativity then we wouldn't feel the need to commentate

As with thomasblue and others, if you seriously think it is personal when (a) we don't know you, and (b) THAT others on here don't comment to us on your poor posts, theN you are greatly misguided

You don't have to only post things we agree with (that's a misconception created by some who cannot hold their own) but you should have the balls to (a) fight your corner without resorting to a 'nip in, nip out' tactics that you currently use, and (b) give us clear and genuine explanations of your thoughts. As with others on here who do that, I would respect you for it; agree or not ;)

Very quiet on the Match Day Thread so far, I see? No BarryWelsh88 either...

Clearly City performing well and leading isn't to your liking! ;)

Re: Favourite Cardiff manager

For the record, I think both managers had their good and bad points...

DJ played the far better football and when I watched a Sky replay of the whole Play Off game (2nd leg) versus Leicester City, I remembered how that was one of the nerviest games I'd ever been to at the time and how bloody good that team was as a whole

Great keep (Marshall(), great defence with (ironically after just seeing Will Vaulks goal from pretty much the same spot) Captain Mark Hudson at the helm, great midfield and an attacking unit that included Chopra, Bothroyd, McCormack and Etuhu

He also got us to a third FA Cup Final and how I would love those players back right now!

However, DJ was a seemingly morose character, who let the players do what they liked, so long as they turned up on the field come match day. That was fine, as it worked....until that infamous Reading game!

Malky completely different, as he was a more disciplined manager who kept his team well in hand and drilled them into a force that could both defend and attack; just not so pretty as the DJ team

His 'success' was something not seen at Cardiff City for many a year and he go us to a Second Rate Cup Final (Swansea term) and then the Premier League before putting up. a pretty good show until the 'Tan spat' derailed the season

His failure for me, was n fighting Tan when he knew early on that the game was up but insisted on 'hanging on' and then taking his bitterness to the 'luvvies' of the BBC and Match of the Day

When the truth out, Malky offered an 'unreserved' apology and the BBC dropped him like a stone...

On the vote above, it was close but I went for DJ on style and enjoyment for me as a paying supporter :ayatollah:

Re: Favourite Cardiff manager

Sat Dec 26, 2020 5:22 pm

Jones for the football we played. (But no time for fans)

Malky for the passion, hard working squad and success we had Carling cup and promotion.

Malky for me as I didn’t like Jones as he seemed like he had zero time for the supporters or no time for the club itself really.
