EU left without a covid vaccine

Mon Dec 21, 2020 7:05 pm

It seems the EU procurement system has been a complete failure. Remember the one the Labour, Plaid Cymru, SNP and Liberal parties all criticised the government for not joining?? No full vaccine roll out for up to 12 months. Whatever happened to all those ventilators the EU were buying and we weren't getting? Well, we had plenty and they didn't get theirs.

German government claims 15,000 Germans could die because they have no covid vaccine to administer, due to the delay in granting permission and ordering the Pfizer vaccine. Germany now wants to leave the EU procurement scheme and adopt the UK system, of go it alone. It is a part owned German company that made the vaccine and they can't have it.

The EU were bullied by the French (as usual) into ordering 300 Million doses of the French vaccine.
They have now admitted it will not be ready until at least next October. YES, a 12 month delay due to production issues.

The UK (under Boris) ordered millions of doses of the vaccine and we have now already administered over 350,000.

So UK citizens vaccinated (first dose) is 350,000
The EU citizens vaccinated is nil, zero, f*** all.

Why would they all want it?
It is only England under Boris that needs the vaccine. The rest of the EU including Wales (under Drakeford) and Scotland (with Sturgeon), has managed the virus fantastically, they have no problems, don't they?

The UK only has enough for 20 million people out of 67 million.

UK - 29% of the population.
EU - 33% of the population.

But I won’t say that too loud ;)

Slight differences 47m short to 300m short? Sounds better than a 4% difference you've quoted

Except the vaccines are being created, distributed and given in batches. The EU buying all 450million now doesn’t mean they can vaccinate everyone by tomorrow so whether they’ve got 50 million or 500 million, by the time their current stocks are depleted they will have secured more especially with more vaccines being approved.

Same reason despite there being hundreds of millions of doses available for purchase we only bought 40 million (2 doses required per person).

The Oxford vaccine will apparently be approved by the MHRA by the end of December with vaccinations to start early in January.

I would love to see the EU come to us begging for our vaccine and for our government to say sorry no deal.

France at 643,801 km² against the (whole) UK's 242,495 km² is less than 3 x larger just to be precise; but you are correct that the populations are almost identical at between 67 and 68 million, which shows the overcrowding issue on this island is a factor to be considered :thumbright:

The Pfizer vaccines storage requirements mean logistics issues over larger distances.. the Oxford vaccine can be stored at fridge temperature for months.

It’s misleading to think the numbers we have are all we are getting are all we are having. It’s the first of the batches. We have procured a range of vaccines of which Pfizer and hopefully Astra will be tbr first in stream. Astra I believe will also be manufactured in the uk. It’s had a production run in India too where they are sitting on a sizeable amount. Pfizer and Astra are massive companies with massive supply chain and production operations. We won’t be left with just what we are given. We have had a head start which is great fir us as many front line clinical staff will be vaccinated soon which is good for us all.

The UK Government has ordered over 300m doses across 7 companies with the biggest being Astra with 100m doses. The thing is with Astra if the approval is for the 11/2 doses rather than 2 we would effectively have 150m doses available. I was watching something on SKY the other day to say there are already 40m doses delivered throughout the UK awaiting approval.

Even Dripford said yesterday Wales has more doses of Astra vaccine available than the Pfizer just waiting approval if and when it comes.

The UK Government is out in front of the EU and their perceived "Buying" power on the vaccine.

Who is distributing the vaccine in EU is it each country or central centre? Sounds complicated and cumbersome compared to our way?

I'm sure they have arranged at least 25 committee meetings to discuss the strategy. I bet the call it the Common Vaccine Policy ;)

Apparently Germany are thinking of going it alone and getting hold of the Pfizer vaccine because the German people are saying they can understand now why the UK voted to leave the EU. The UK in a couple of weeks have vaccinated more people per 100k population than any other country in the world massive egg on the faces on EU leaders, Macron in particular for selling the French vaccine to the EU.

For France the EU is the gift that keeps on giving.

Germany take three times as much as they need just in case, then they let France have some because they backed them trying to stop Brexit, and let them march through during the War, then the rest have to beg/fight it out amongst themselves.
