Drakeford announces Wales lockdown at midnight, as Christmas plans cut...



The whole of Wales will be placed under lockdown from midnight with festive plans cancelled for all but Christmas Day.

First Minister Mark Drakeford made the announcement after urgent talks with ministers over a new strain of coronavirus.

From 23 to 28 December rules had been due to be relaxed to allow people to celebrate the holidays with loved-ones.

But now this is limited to just Christmas Day.

Announcing the strict new measures, which will affect millions of people, Mr Drakeford said: "While we all want to avoid further disruption to businesses and plans for Christmas, our overriding duty is to protect lives here in Wales."

He added: "We know that 2021 will be a different and a better year.
"Our economy will recover. Christmas will come again."

The changes mean that a Wales-wide lockdown, which was due to come into affect from 28 December, has been brought forward and will begin at midnight tonight.

All of Wales will be placed into the highest level of lockdown - Level 4 - with all but essential shops closed, and people being told to "stay home" to save lives.

I was going to comment along the lines of 'this is becoming a joke', but remembered that I thought that 6 months' ago. In a free, democratic country there has to be a balance between having the right to live a free and normal life and protecting others from catching this virus. Alas, our Government has no such intention. They can - and will - do whatever they so please, without redress, argument, or balance.

One simple answer to the idiots breaking rules put them up in the empty hotels for 10days with army keeping them in isolation! Do that soon stop others taking the piss with parties ect... did similar in Australia with students soon sorted out problem..
But one major concern is why are people who are supposed to be wearing ppe and taking extra precautions in work are catching corvid like the 9 in vaccine centre? Its same with police and health boards across Wales something is not right or people are not practicing what they preach?

We must stay fully locked down until there are zero cases in the world and not one death from Covid anywhere ever.

Don't worry about those dying from cancer, heart disease, cancelled appointments, undiagnosed diseases, suicides, mental problem - they don't count as not once have you acknowledged any of these indirect deaths since the beginning of March.

It's been Covid all the way - a visitor from Mars ( who would need to self isolate for 14 days in their spaceship) could be forgiven for thinking that there are no other illnesses or ways to die on Earth than Covid 19.

But wait say the believers - there is a vaccine which will free us all from our houses and having to wear masks all the time and we'll be free again just like the flu vaccine which has been such a success that nobody ever dies from the flu anymore.

Best to stay indoors for the next couple of years to see how we get on. Don't worry about the economy, people's mental welfare, jobs or the future of our children they're completely irrelevant.

Hospital Covid wards wont be able to cope with those levels of admissions, made even worse by lack of staff. Nurses / Dr's in the childrens hospital have been transferred to help out on the covid ward.

On a positive not it looks like AZ / Oxford vaccine will be available within 10 days or so. We can produce enough of this as we need and will only be held back by the logistics of getting it delivered to places

I'm no Drakeford lover in fact I think he is weak and weakness has no place in strong Government but with infection rates as high as they are in South East Wales and our hospitals full what were the choices.

Having said that why did he wait for Boris to lockdown London and South East England. Whatever your views on Boris it takes balls to do this so close to Christmas and it's what strong Government is all about making the tough decisions. Now he needs to make sure that as much help as possible goes to business sector hospitality etc because this is the worst news possible.

Drakeford on the other hand was prepared to wait until 28th December until Boris showed some balls that's where his weakness is.

If nothing else let's hope this shows Boris has learned the lesson from the first wave.

Being independent means being independent financially economically and politically from mother country! All the people of serious integrity now know the main area of transmission is at home hence the Xmas restrictions. Hospitality employs tens of thousands of Welsh people the actual transmission rates within this sector hover between 2-3%, supermarkets 18 - 20 % schools are off the scale. The wanker in charge refuses point blank to answer specific questions relating to this a mixture of abject cowardice by journalists and party apparatchiks. Well there are elections in May , by the way Labour wanted to postpone said elections, go out and vote chuck this bum and his stinking corrupt party out. I have never been a member of any Political Party. Tens of thousands of Welsh people now face the dole all because we have a grade one c**t in charge.
