A welcome return for Whyte

Whether Gavin Whyte would have been selected if Junior Hoilett or Josh Murphy were fully fit is anyone's guess, but, by hook or by crook, he was given the nod to start against Birmingham City, his first of the season.

Whyte was a mainstay under Neil Warnock last season and while he split opinion, I was always a big fan. In fact, having seen the signing of Kieffer Moore, I thought he could have a big part to play this season as he is the type of winger to hit the byline and send in crosses.

Neil Harris last season said that the Northern Ireland international had a few things to work on at the business end of the pitch, his final delivery and finishing ability, and that was understandable.

But he has waited patiently for his chance this term and I think he took it excellently.

He was so important for Cardiff's front press, indeed it was his intervention which forced Jake Clarke-Salter into an awful pass back, which resulted in the Bluebirds' opener.

His energy also helped Leandro Bacuna, too, and at times they were interchanging on that right flank, which gave a healthy balance on that side of the pitch.

"The reason Gavin has been involved in the last four, five, six games is because his attitude is great, training wise he trains like you see him on the pitch; running everywhere, dynamic," Harris said.

"He is a great lad and is really popular in the changing room. In training, he has just stepped up a notch, had a little more end product in training, even in small-sided games, he has been productive.

"He has shown a hunger to want to play and, for me, the bigger picture with Gav is that he is not young in age, in modern-day football, at 24, but he is in games, Championship games and league football, coming from Ireland later, a couple of years behind everyone else.

"I was really pleased for Gav tonight, not just to start but to be productive as well, certainly in the first half an hour."

I've heard all the excuses - not had a run of games, only comes on as a sub, etc etc.

Unfortunately nothing he has done in the admittedly short amount of playing time he's been given suggests that he is any more than a League 1 player at best. We've had a few of them recently - Eoin Doyle, Alex Revell to name but two. Decent hardworking players who are not quite up to Championship level.

Whyte should go out on loan to a League 1 club in January with a view to a permanent move asap.

The only time I properly remember him getting the ball we were on a counter attack, with numbers ahead, he turned back and the ball ended up with Smithies - about 2 minutes later Birmingham equalised. I am not saying he is to blame for the goal, but his decision making certainly took the momentum out of the game. After that, I barely remember noticing him.

I prefer not to write anyone off, but I certainly am not banking on him changing our season.

your probably correct but with us being as thin on the ground as we are can we afford to let him go on loan ? personally i think we are 2 short at least as it is...
