Strongbow - How much !!!

Sun Dec 13, 2020 5:23 pm

Normally buy a small box of bow this time of year in case someone turns up and fancies a cider, I also don't mind the occasional can or two and it's normally cheap enough that i don't fret if its still in the garage 6 months later ...

But it feels like it twice the cost this year. I take it this is down to my WAG mates down the bay knowing what's best for me. :old:

Bought another box of Peroni instead :occasion5:

Need my help :)

Minimum price per unit.

Anything over 5% I dont think (but please correct me if I'm wrong) will cost at least £1 a can.
Stella is now down to 4.6% I think.

its minimum unit price... the formula is MUP { 50 PENCE } X STRENGTH { bow is 4.5 X VOLUME IN LITRES SO A 440 ML CAN IS .44 = 99P MINIMUM PRICE...
so the least you will pay in wales for a box of 18 is £17.82.... or you can buy the same box in a tesco across the bridge for £10 if you have a clubcard...

I remember people doing the duty free runs over to Calais and coming back with a van load then flogging it all. You'll have people going over the bridge to do that soon.

Wow. I'd noticed how much supermarket beer had gone up and assumed it was the super markets taking advantage of the Covid shite maybe with some supply issues thrown in. When searched see wales minimum pricing came in in March, under the cover of covid. Drippy lucky this is more widely known.

As a matter of interest the extra tax does it go to WAG or westminister ?

Id imagine its Westminster,
but does it generate extra tax revenue? If people reduced their consumption proportionately then the revenue would be the same. I think the WAG measure it as a long term saving on the nhs rather than an increase in revenue.

It’s already happening. Wonder how long till a massive booze supermarket is built off the M49 just as you get off the bridge?

I didn't realize the effect of minimum pricing. I have almost stopped drinking in the house, the occasional few bottles of Peroni, 1664 or Stella but I am partial to the odd bow.....

Not sure what minimum pricing's intent is, how do they measure its success ? I just bought another box of stronger beer

Surprised whoever manufactures ciders haven't taken WAG to court over unfair competition rules as it must have hurt them. But i suppose in the grand scheme of thing Wales is so small it doesn't matter.

I hope all that wanted devolution and even dafter independence are so proud of your elected representatives.

Roll on the elections

I'm pretty sure the extra money raised is kept by the supermarkets. This was part of the Welsh Labour party's manifesto, but it was well hidden.

A box of 10 x 440ml cans of Stella costs £10.03 (minimum price in Wales) in Asda here, but costs £8 in Asda Cribbs Causeway, Bristol

It's not a 'tax'. The extra revenue will go to the retailer, e.g. the supermarkets.

It’s very strange.

I’m bringing a boot full of Carling back Christmas for family as it’s a lot cheaper in England.

Madness.
