Not going on to better things

Sun Dec 13, 2020 10:52 am

Yesterday's derby drubbing made me think.
Why do players, and managers, not go on to better things after time with us?
The players that come to mind that have are too long ago. Ramsey, Gabbs, Collins, Earnie, even Ledley.
And its not just homegrown talent. Our signings, even the successful ones, never better themselves after us. Fraser Campbell, Mutch, even Marshall left us and his career went now where. Even going back to Thorne and Kav. Top signings but their careers peaked with us.
Our best player in PL was Camarasa and he's barely played since.
Same for managers too. DJ hardly worked since and then there is MM.
Can put up with the odd abject failure, the big Dane, Madine and Flint, but surely this balances with odd win too.
And not just about money, but about whats been achieved and careers they've gone on to have.
Manga, McPhail, Gunnar, Chopra, Boothroyd, Noone, Turner all peaked at their time with us.
We were pretty much level money wise with Medal and Caulker. And you can say Medal has had strong career but he was only with us a season and his time with us not really influential in that. If anything his time with us was his blip. Zahore only one gone for more money and he's been useless since a half season purple patch in the championship.
Our transfer committee doesn't need to worry about sell on clauses that's for sure.
Considering 15 years of success this is really strange only made worse by the long list of players and managers from down the road who have gone on to better things.
Maybe there are some players I'm missing and be delighted to be proved wrong.

Makes you wonder.

These are not my 2 favourite characters, DJ and Ridsdale, but when they were running the show they were selling players on at a good profit. You forgot to mention Roger Johnson and Loovans. Some will say most of the credit there must go to Sam Hamman and they will have a good point. When Ridsdale came in I'm struggling to think who he brought into the club that made us a profit. As for Tan coming I don't think there has been anyone. Perhaps your answer is there.

I think it’s one of two things. Firstly it could be linked to the style and coaching of the team.

Dave Jones’ teams played class football and it made the players stand out. Other teams thought he could do a job in my team. Under Malky, Warnock and Harris this is simply not going to be the case as the football is so functional.

It also could be that the raison d’etre of the club has changed.

Previously players would go on to better things as we were actively trying to sell them to make ends meet. Certainly due to a culmination of things Sam was selling anything not nailed down. And then under Ridsdale we needed to sell a player a year to survive.

Under Tan we don’t do that. We keep our best players and sell those we want to.
