Steve Cooper reveals what he said in Swansea City's iconic post-Cardiff City huddle as boss delivers touching message to fans

Swansea City boss Steve Cooper had a special message for his players after the South Wales derby triumph over Cardiff City

Ian Mitchelmore
Swansea City players showed their unity after the South Wales derby triumph over Cardiff City by forming a huddle on the pitch.

Jamal Lowe's brace earned Steve Cooper's men all three points in the Welsh capital, with Neil Harris' men having Joe Ralls sent off in the second half.

It was a deserved victory for the Swans who controlled the game from start to finish and created the better chances throughout.

After the game, Swansea's players and coaching staff formed a huddle on the middle of the pitch.

And Cooper revealed his side were determined to show their unity after clinching what is a victory that will hugely lift the mood of the Jack Army who were unable to attend due to coronavirus restrictions.

"This is for you [fans]," he said.

"That's why I wanted to get everybody together on the pitch at the end of the game, to show the togetherness in the group, while knowing it's for the supporters as well.

"I think it's tough times, for everybody in south Wales, but obviously we're looking after our own in Swansea.

"I know how important this game is. The atmospheres in the games last year, especially the one at the Liberty, were on a different scale.

"I reminded the boys of that before we left to come down here earlier. It was important that they were in our minds today."

Victory lifted Swansea - albeit potentially only briefly - up to second in the Championship table.

STEVE COOPER:

Swansea head coach Steve Cooper:

"Any derby win is obviously a good one but to do it in the way we did it makes it even nicer. I thought we were more than good for it from start to finish.

"We did it our way, with the ball, trying to play through the lines, trying to create proper chances.

"Our position on the pitch was excellent. We found the spaces very well. We knew moving the ball together would get us to good areas and the game went to plan.

"It's one for the supporters and I hope they have a good day."

I just feel as though NH doesn't have this kind of managerial/coaching awareness

Lying sod he did it to make a point! ffs anybody thought they won a cup final with 30 staff huddling at end game he wouldn't have done it against any other team! He made out everything he planned worked out...mmm. saw same tactics as in previous games they are good at it no question about that... but Harris played into their hands by keeping a tired team and it showed? Different team who knows if be different result certainly wouldn't have been inept a performance as this was.

One of the key issues when managing a football team over a year long season is dealing with not being able to play the same team game in game out. Harris is a chancer and he got proper found out and done turned over today.

All cockernees are chancers. It's bred into them. High opinions of themselves that is very rarely backed up by performance.

It does mean more to Swansea players and fans, they have never had another rival except for us, it's nice to beat them, but mostly just to shut their gobby fans up! We've had other rivalries with Bristol City, a bit with Rovers and even Newport in the past, it makes it different, they are out on a limb with no real rivals close, just us forty miles away.
