Simon Howarth

Just looked up his stats, searching for something else.

He had a phenomenal goal scoring record in his career. Average 1 in 3 and scored a hatful for Wigan and Tranmere, after he had had a good start for us. Only really had one season before he was sold ( typical of selling to survive back then)

He's still only 43. There are plenty of players still playing Welsh League at that age.

Don't know if he settled up north, or if he is back in Wales.

A player clearly who knew how to score. Surprising therefore he only gained 5 Wales caps.

Average player and 1 in 3 for a striker is certainly not a phenomenal record..

Remember going to Wigan in 97, Springfield Park.. we won 1-0 Howarth, boiling hot day, lying down on the terrace off my box., opened my eyes to see Howarth smash it in.. that’s it.

I was only young, but remember being really excited when we signed Howarth. Same as from Preston Kurt Nogan. Can't remember if either turned out to be anything, but I do remember them being 'big players' in League One terms back then.

Don’t think we signed Howarth sure he came through the youth set up, might be wrong though

I stand corrected, you are right. For some reason I thought you we had signed him from Wigan! Turned out to be a really good player at League 1 level.

We got a good price for him at the time. Half a milion i believe which was quite a bit in the late nineties when he left. I seem to remember he upset the Wigan fans by doing the Ayatolah when we played them.

Good player was Haworth, unfortunately he had to retire early due to injury.
I was at Wigan, when we got stuffed 4-0. Haworth was playing for Wigan and did the ayotallah. Wigan fans went ballistic and they had to take him off. Was Alan Corks last game as Manager.

Off topic but after that we went on an amazing run including the 7-1 win at Oldham only for the disappointment of the play offs against Stoke

That’s right, after Lennie took over and we loaned Campbell. That Stoke game was probably the most gutted I’ve ever felt after a defeat. Don’t know why, but Blackpool didn’t have the same effect.

It was dreadful. Last minute(offside)goal to level it, last minute or so of extra time deflected goal to win it. Stoke were so lucky that night. My friends son was about 12 at the time and hasn't been back since. Couldnt face feeling like that again!
