My best ever seen Cardiff team

Mon Dec 07, 2020 11:07 am

I started watching Cardiff in 1992. I have seen too many players to mention. As I am bored I started to think about my best ever team of players I have seen the blue (and red and other colours).

Be interested in the opinion of others.

GK - David Marshall. Always felt safe with him in goal.

RB - Mark Delaney. Would love him at right back for us now. Defended well and got forward.
CB - Sean Morrison. Defends well and scores. Miss him when he is not playing.
CB - Danny Gabbiadon. Absolute class. Pace and good in the air. Perfect foil for Morrison.
LB - Joe Bennett. Gets stick but gets up and down and when in form can be really good.

CM - Graham Kavanagh. Could do everything. Would be captain. Loved this guy.
CM - Aaron Ramsey. Best player I’ve seen at the City. Made it look easy.
CM - Peter Whittingham. Wand of a left foot. Great player. Could do what he wanted.

RW - Jason Koumas. One of the mysteries is why he didn’t make an impact at the top level.
CF - Kiefer Moore. Maybe controversial but I think he would be class bringing others in.
LW - Craig Bellamy. Often was too good for his team mates. But some of the stuff he did was top class.

Subs
Etheridge
Mcnaughton
Johnson
Gunnarsson
Ledley
Chopra
Earnshaw

Anyone I missed?

Anyone else care to partake?

I know this wasn't specifically your question but I would say the best ever TEAM I have seen is the 2011-2012 team.

(I know that the obvious choice would be either the x2 promotion/premier years)

We had the likes of;

Marshall / Heaton
McNaughton / Turner / Hudson / Naylor / Quinn / Jloyd Samuel (pre night out haha)
Drinkwater / Koumas / Burke / Ramsey / Olofinjana / Bellamy / McPhail / Whittingham
Bothroyd / Chopra / McCormack

What a team

Medel was close to my bench but I went Gunnarsson as he was at the club so long.

Sullivan left back?

Colin... i thought he was real class in a poor team...having won 1 game in 12 we signed him, immediately won 4 on the bounce and over the remainder of the season climbed from 20th to 9th... maybe im giving him too much credit for that ? but i thought him a stand out performer...
Gunnarson as a servant but couldnt get in ahead of Medel in the prem...
the one id love to find room for is Dwyer though.... who i dont think was quite good enough but had the biggest heart ever and could fill any gap including and do a decent job...

GK- David Marshall - the bseason we were first promoted is the best I’ve ever seen a keeper play. Looked unbeatable
LB - Kevin McNaughton - a 7/10 every single game for years. Great character too
CB- Mark Hudson - season we were first promoted he was unbelievable. Best I’ve seen a city centre back play
CB - Danny Gabbidon - Classiest centre back we’ve had
RB - Mark Delaney - Rapid.
LW - Peter Whittingham - What a player. Wand of a left foot.
CM - Aaron Ramsey (loan season) - Just class
CM - Seyi Olifanjana - On his day, I thought he was awesome.
RW - Jason Koumas - So skilful and clever. Made things look easy.
FC - Michael Chopra - 20 goal striker but could play too. Some great goals
FC - Jay Bothroyd - Seaon he earned an England call up is the best I’ve ever seen a forward play for us. He was unreal that season

I have to agree. Look at that midfield and forward selection. But you forgot one other player who used to link up brilliantly with Burke. Adam Matthews. It was Dave Jones decision to leave out Burke for four games and replace him with Emmanuel Thomas- we picked up 2 points from 12 against relatively easy opposition- and to drop Mathews after one mistake at Ipswich which in my opinion cosy us automatic promotion

I don't remember a lot about the fall out but do remember that Jones made it very public in the press and that

I was at Ipswich that day and as I recall Mathews let someone get in at the far post to score. He was 18 years of age and had been playing out of his skin and rather than just accept it as a mistake that happens, David Jones went on tv and critisized him. David Jones was probably the best manager we have had for playing attractive football but his man management was poor

Sullivan was exellent that season and as you rightly say we went on run to finish well up the table. I think it coincided with the introduction of a very young Lyndon Jones though at right back, though i do remember we had Tim Gilbert there as well. Gilbert and Sullivan at full back
