Watford's Troy Deeney takes swipe at Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest in 'old manned' jibe

The Watford striker had some pretty frank views on his side's performance against Cardiff City on Saturday and Nottingham Forest in midweek

By Tom Coleman

Sunday 6th December 2020

Watford striker Troy Deeney has taken a swipe at Cardiff City's playing style, claiming his side were 'old-manned' during their 1-0 defeat to the Bluebirds on Saturday.

City secured a third straight victory courtesy of Kieffer Moore's strike two minutes before the break, much to the frustration of the near-2,000 fans in attendance.

Deeney, who's never been one to shy away from the more agricultural side of the game, told Hive Live after the defeat: "It was a nice occasion to have real noise, real fans around and it is great to get the country going back to some form of normality. A game with fans is good, obviously.

"But I thought we got old-manned and by that I mean there were old professionals going down, making it difficult and being horrible to play against.

"It was a proper Championship 1-0 away win so if you're that team you're very happy with that.

"If you to continue to lose these sorts of games you're going to be in a very difficult place moving forward.

"They weren't great but they knew what they came here for and they did it very well.

"We'll play that game probably 10 more times this season so we have to learn to fix it up, with the battles first and the quality will show after."

The result sees Cardiff move to within four points of the top six, while Watford now sit outside the play-off positions on goal difference.

With the Hornets hoping to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, Deeney has demanded that his side raise their game, adding that even a play-offs berth would not be considered a successful season. In doing so, he made another dig at fellow Championship outfit Nottingham Forest, who held the Vicarage Road side to a draw in midweek.

"It's not for the fans, this is for us," he added

"Our job is to win the league and we're not going to pussyfoot about and say the play-offs is good enough.

"We've got to win this league so if we can do our job - fans here or not - we've still got a job to do and we didn't do that against Cardiff.

"For the fans to be back it's great and we appreciate all the noise they make but we have to do better and there's no reason for the two performances in the last week (also a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest).

"We've been old manned against two proper Championship teams."

I was reading a Watford forum and was amazed about how negative they were about their team and this was before the match they were even more negative after. Many thought they were plying crap and would probably lose to us and should sack their manger. Got to say I was really surprised as they had six wins and a draw from seven home games. One thing they were all in agreement on was Troy Deeney had a terrible game and has been poor all season. He is on a hundred grand a week too. Think their fans expect automatic promotion and even the playoffs are seen as failure. Maybe they have delusions of grandeur after spending a few season in the premier.

We came, we saw, we conquered...and Troy Deeney (he might have been a Bluebird) looks to excuse their defeat :laughing6:

The ONLY 'swipe' that mattered was the one (pictured) below and it was administered by a Bluebird on a Hornet :D

Last time we played Watford they stuffed 5 pass us at CCS. They had some class players in their squad then and Troy Deeney was not getting a look in.

I don't exactly know what has happened since then but I know some diehard Watford supporters that have given up on their club in the last 2 seasons.

Their centre forward (Jao?) spent time on the floor after mist tacked plus the guy that Ojo tacked and got a booking for looked as if he’d been shot, plus one of their midfielders trod on Joe Ralls’ leg, plus Deeney himself slid in with his studs up on Nelson. Should I continue??
The only city players who went down for any amount of time to my knowledge was Morrison after Smithes forearmed him accidentally.
As Sven said, poor excuse for losing.

Spot on! Sour and grapes spring to mind, and as for their"fans" it was talked about on talk sport this afternoon, and they were saying it was shocking, some fans seen leaving on 78 mins!! Mentioned it would be understandable if they were getting hammered,And their were 20k+ in the ground,so parking and leaving, could be an excuse, but with 2k in attendance, hardly going to be a crush at final whistle!! Embarrassing from them.

Bloody hell Deeney you play for little old Watford not Barcelona mate

Only reaching the play offs would be a disappointment?? Any more performances like yesterday and you won’t be in the top 10!!!

Said earlier they've been inconsistent in their performances despite that record at home and yesterday was typical of them,
but this time they got
Beaten by a more organised team..

Suppose it would be as they've kept their premier league squad just like Norwich and Bournemouth! But as others have found out championship is never easy no matter how good you think you are. :D

That's where the misinformation lies, Allan...

Neither Watford or (more so) Norwich had a 'Premier League' squad; hence they now ply their trade in The Championship

Horses for course and seems Troy Deeney had delusions of grandeur that mean his current ambitions well outweigh his/Watford's current potential :laughing6:

Have they sold their players from premier league time Got impression their squads are basically the same ones? Ok may not be premier league quality but still best in championship surely....

I love to hear these sour grapes again from opposition teams after we’ve beat them! Reminds me of the warnock days. Also a bit rich from Deeney as In the premier league against the bigger teams he would try and be physical and rough up opposition defences. He also said arsenal have no ‘cojones’ for not standing up to it once I believe. Loved watching some Watford fans leaving early as well!

Watching the game live I could not believe people were leaving the ground early. 1 goal in it, team on the front foot, 2,000 fans for the first time in months and they're walking out?

To me he is giving us a backhanded compliment on a very professional performance If you look at Watford’s forum they are slaying him for his lack of movement and effort

Watford were far too ponderous going forward, look like a disjointed team. Amazed that Sarr was so quiet, I thought he was meant to be a top talent on his way to Liverpool, but maybe has downed tools a bit.

Deeney simply talks too much.

It is a compliment really.

Doesn't matter who you are, if you find a tactic that gets you clean sheets and goals you're going to stick to it.
Everyone knows those sort of wins irritate the hell out of the opposition and are the ones that get you promoted.

We were dominant first half and capitalised on it. Watford had one chance at the end to talk of but Vaulks defended it well.

I read that as a back handed compliment, almost like saying to his own team if they don't start to man up, they simply won't go back up. Too many sides who have been relatively comfortable for a few seasons, fail to adjust to The Championship once relegated, few go straight back up.
