It’s been a boring Sunday with my wife in work, so I’ve used the opportunity to reflect on Cardiff City’s season so far.
I decided to break the season down into 5-game blocks (I was really bored and appreciate a form guide is usually based on 6-games) and compare our form on each block so far, in comparison with the last 5 seasons of the final English league Championship standings and how many points were required to get both a play off spot and automatic promotion finish.
Season P/offs Auto
2019-2020 70pts 82pts
2018-2019 74pts 84pts
2017-2018 74pts 89pts
2016-2017 76pts 86pts
2015-2016 70pts 90pts
Championship points average for last 5 seasons
72.8pts (7.91pts every 5 games) for playoffs
86.2pts (9.36pts every 5 games) for automatic promotion
Below is Cardiff City’s season so far, with a breakdown of EVERY consecutive 5-game (inclusive) streak given a total points (pts). For clarity, game 1 was our first game of the season at home to Sheffield Wednesday, with game 16 being the latest against match versus Watford away.
Games 1-5 = 7pts
Games 2-6 = 8pts
Games 3-7 = 6pts
Games 4-8 = 7pts
Games 5-9 = 6pts
Games 6-10 = 6pts
Games 7-11 = 5pts
Games 8-12 = 5pts
Games 9-13 = 4pts
Games 10-14 = 7pts
Games 11-15 = 7pts
Games 12-16 = 10pts
Other than the games 2-6 block, where we were showing play off form, this highlights how significant our recent form has been, which historically if maintained over the season in its entirety would see us promoted automatically.
Therefore, as a result of our season so far, I’ve adjusted the figures to reflect accordingly.
With 30-games remaining, we need to achieve the following.
49.8pts for play offs (8.3pts per 5 games)
63.2pts for automatic promotion (10.56pts per game)
Looking at our next block of 5 games (see below), what’s everyone’s thoughts on where the points will come from?
A Stoke City
H Swansea City
H Birmingham City
A Norwich City
H Brentford
