Wizz Air has announced it will bring nine new routes to Cardiff Airport, creating 40 jobs.
Good news for holidaymakers as a budget airline has announced a new permanent base at Cardiff Airport providing flights to destinations across Europe and Egypt.
Wizz Air will also create 40 jobs as it brings nine new routes in a much-needed boost for the airport.
They will be to resorts such as Alicante, Faro and Tenerife, as well as season routes to Corfu and Palma de Mallorca as well as Lanzarote and Sharm El Sheikh during the winter.
Wales transport Minister Ken Skates said: "This is a positive step for the airport to emerge from the impact of Covid-19."
Cardiff Airport will become the airline's fourth base in the UK, following Luton, Gatwick and Doncaster Sheffield.
The airline said the move will also indirectly create 250 further jobs in the supply chain.
Last month, the low-cost airline defied the coronavirus gloom to launch new routes from UK airports.
The airline, which currently operates from 11 UK airports, including Luton and Birmingham, added Gatwick and Doncaster and Sheffield to its UK network last month.
Managing Director Owain Jones said: "This (move to Cardiff) reflects Wizz Air's continued commitment to serving the UK market and generating economic growth, as we create local jobs, stimulate the tourism and hospitality industries and deliver on our promise of providing affordable, direct flights to exciting holiday destinations."
Hundreds of thousands of Flybe passengers had travelled through the airport each year across their several key routes.
Spencer Birns, Cardiff Airport's interim chief executive, said the new arrival was "fantastic news for Wales".
He added: "We know many people living in Wales are craving a well-deserved holiday after such a challenging year and these new flights will give so many more opportunities for holidays to be planned now that will give us all something to look forward to for next year."

Currently if I want to go from town to the airport it’s almost the same journey time as if I was going to Bristol airport which is much larger and has a much larger selection of flights on offer. A 20-30 minute train from Central to the airport without having to wait at Rhoose for a connecting bus would be a much nicer experience and would help divert back footfall from Bristol Airport.
Personally, there’s been several occasions I’ve flown out of Bristol just because there’s a better selection and there’s almost no advantage to flying from Cardiff bar a ~10 minute quicker journey.
But what do I know

Unfortunately not enough airlines fly from rhoose to justify a dedicated service to airport.... at moment I assume the train is for bridgend and uses vale line instead of mainline one? Also where line is situated not sure its that easy to put any track to airport! Ideally a small tramway to airport would be good ... WG already started to make access easier 7 mile lane been upgraded and trying to get past objections for link rd from m4 at llantrisant? But like citys training ground your talking posh houses and locals wont have big rd through their countryside.

Bluebird For Life wrote:this is good news for job creation, but why the same old tired routes to sun spots that are available with other airlines form Cardiff. Wizz is a carrier that has opened up many routes in Eastern Europe - surely a direct flight to a few of those such as Warsaw, Prague, Budapest etc would appeal to fill a flight at least once a week. I can't see the point of more flights to Spain, Canaries etc...

Me and a mate flew wizz air from Luton to Belgrade last year for £7.00 each way !!!yes £7.00 each way but cost us a lot more to drive to Luton and park car for a week - CRAZY.
Good news indeed that wizz air is coming to Cardiff Airport But as many have already stated the Train to Airport does not exist.
It is terrible to say, living in Mid Wales, That it is 200 times easier, cheaper and more convenient, for anyone around this area (large catchment area) to Train travel to Birmingham International Train station (virtually in the airport) via direct train on Cambrian Railway line (Aberystwyth - Birm Intl) or Manchester airport Via Shrewsbury (change) than it is to travel to Cardiff Airport (Aber/shrews/Cardiff/ Bus) - Crazy.
Why not make a new spur line, as suggested, directly to/from airport to Cardiff - Christ, It is our Capital city afterall. Think of Tourists coming in as well. I know that it all costs money but that would be money well spent.
