What about Harris' future now?

Wed Dec 02, 2020 11:44 am

Firstly chuffed with 6 pts and 7 goals for and zero against. You really can't ask for any more.

After two emphatic ( and much needed) wins against what I would class as run of the mill championship teams, How is Neil Harris'future as manager of our club now affected?

I was still saying that a loss to Hudds would see the end of Harris, but at what point do these calls for his head come back?.

We have Watford, Swansea, Norwich, Brentford over the next few weeks. Difficult games which could see us drop back into the bottom third.

I believe Harris has to keep picking up points as a few losses will see him having another chat with Tan. Whether he keeps picking up points depends on tactics, and the players belief in what he is doing.

December could be critical not to our survival in the league, but to what we can expect for the remainder of the season. Its the first time we have the chance to go on a run. We need to take that chance.

I thought Harris was dead and buried after the Coventry game but has pulled it back with two class performances which have definitely given him a few more games. The club do need to make a decision though, he can't be playing for his job after every loss or bad performance. He'll probably be judged on our league position in January now. If we are within few points of top 6 he'll probably be given more time. If we slide down the table again and are completely adrift of the top 6 I think he'll be replaced. Weve been poor for most of the season but were never in danger of being relegated. But even at this point anything other than a top 6 finish will be seen as failed campaign.

If it was not for one rather dreadful mistake in each of the games against Millwall and Coventry , we would now be 8th in the table with 24 points and a goal difference of plus 9. I think that particularly after last season Neil harris does deserve a bit more patience and support. The four points we dropped were down to mistakes that no manager can legislate for. I mean, look at our second goal last night. Great opportunism by Junior, but woeful defending by their centre half. What was he thinking?

I think sometimes we can get a little unrealistic.

Interesting to note that our performances have improved with the new 5 sub rule. Gives Harris more flexibility to try out new combinations such as Moore/Harris. Also tired players can now be rested, and managed physically better, rather than risk muscle injuries.

im afraid that he is playing for his job every week though { well almost } and he is not alone... under performing or being deemed to be and the axe is out in prep... personally i dont think the gap between us and the top 6 can be allowed to grow . it doesnt mean winning every week but certainly more often than we have prior to the last 2 games....
got to say he has put himself in this spot it was not unlucky it was over cautious... and shoul;d he end up being replaced im sure he will kick himself

The players seem to be more comfortable in a 4-4-2 formation as Moore and Harris pulled them all over the place last night and now we seem to be able to get behind sides with quality crosses too.

I suspect he will be given December, and success will be within touching distance of a play off place.

I think the board might realise December's fixtures are extremely tough.

I'm getting the feeling he is a good mid/top half Championship manager, but not one who can get us out of the Championship and not one who can sustain a season long promotion campaign

we are where we are mate... where some games that a draw would have been a good result have now become games where a win is needed...

Two swallows doth not a Summer make...

Fickle fans? Some but not all. A recent poll showed that the vast majority were not happy with the manager's performance at that time

We've had dome pretty disastrous results so far this season and whilst two wins are very welcome the jury will sadly be out for some time yet...which hopefully will keep the pressure on to keep wining and appease... :thumbright:

Hes been the master of his own downfall this season and might have given himself too much to do now, particularly given how difficult this month looks. I think the last two games have given him some time but he can't drift away from the top 6. And to do that he'll have to turn over some decent teams this month.

Spot on,the past is just that, the past.

Onwards and upwards, until playing us,huddersfield had scored 8 or 9 in their previous 3 games,so to keep them scoreless, and to hit 3,was a top performance.

Jury is still out for me.

I hope he is successful and I'm hoping he has a good December. My fear is its going to be a tough month and I would say he needs a similar return of results to keep his job. I win against the Jacks and he will be half way there.

Safe. Harris will most likely stay on now. I know us fans have criticized but it was for the good of the team. Like they say you dont learn unless you fail. Now I know we dont want failure hense the reason for this comeback in performance and urgency to get the wins and get scoring. So fully happy with the response from Harris and the team onwards and upwards with a tough game against Watford who will have fans back.

It's a shame that most teams in the league will have fans back but us the jacks, Newport and Wrexham.

Except for the last 2 games are season so far has been poor and we need a good run to get into the top 6. As previously stated if we are way off the pace in January he will be gone. The last 2 games makes it more strange why we have been so poor as all I can see added is a young boy up front. Clearly there has been problems in that you play with no passion or ideas against Coventry and others and then turn it on in the last 2 games.

Exactly, so Harris knows what's needed now. It wasn't the defeats we suffered as much as the dire performances, we know the squad has quality and all it took was for a stubborn manager to change things. He's done that now so no reason why we shouldn't be climbing the table. Of course we'll lose again, that goes without saying, but if they are at least trying, you can't ask for more.

Totally agree with you. It was the dire performances that lead to many calling for the manager to go, not necessarily the results, as even our defeats have generally been by the odd goal.

In my mind there was never any doubt that we had enough quality players to do the business in this league although from a managerial point of view it is slightly worrying that it took desperate measures to get the team firing again. Maybe it's better to be a lucky manager than a good one !

Lets hope we don't revert to holding tight and sitting back keep to the same pattern attacking closing down and not sitting off and let tbem play
away or at home lets keep playing the same
When watching brentford and leeds last season they played the same home or away and it payed dividends

It’s a results business.

He’s had two great results let’s get more.

Let’s not forget up until these two we were dreadful and playing awful. Obviously if we keep playing well and getting points he will stay.

Anymore of that previous rubbish and he will get a taxi.

Draw with Watford, beat Stoke and Swansea and I would give him a chance.

Re: What about Harris' future now?

I do not think he is a difference maker in the way that top managers are and we needn't worry about a premier league club poaching him.

I am convinced that he is so determined to prove he is a modern manager playing in the right way that he sacrificed common sense and the visually obvious even though we do not have the personnel to play that way. I was surprised how many goals were scored this round of championship games from teams over playing from the back and giving the ball away. As a little Frenchman once said "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake."

We will win, lose and draw games but lets not commit bloody suicide with ponderous unnatural unnecessary "possession" based game. We are shit at it and history and stats paint a damming picture. I hope the penny has dropped that Marlon is a neat, tidy all round 6/10 player, but he slows us down too much.

Harris is not good enough to interfere with tactics and game plans and our squad is one dimensional. 4231, 442, 422 is really all the same. The same 11 lads on the field looking to score more than the opposition.

I quite like, we are Cardiff City, you know what we are going to do, try to stop us. If you do well done. We are a physically strong team, why take that away in favour of technique ?

My feeling is he will still be gone after 1 bad defeat.
When he spoke out about Pattersons transfer was the begining of the end.
