[b]The bluebirds could be about to enter a new competition alongside neighbours Newport County. Named the Nathaniel MG Cup.

Cardiff City and Newport County to enter Nathaniel MG Cup for first time in history

Cardiff City and Newport County have been invited by the FAW to compete in this season's competition

Sport

Tuesday 1st December 2020

Cardiff City will have another cup to compete in this season after being entered in the 2020/21 Nathaniel MG Cup.

The Bluebirds, alongside Newport County, will be entering the competition for the first time in their history, after being invited by the Football Association of Wales.

The Nathaniel MG Cup is the League Cup of the Welsh pyramid system and consists of the 12 clubs from the Cymru Premier and the 32 from the Cymru North and South.

Winners of the competition earn prize money as well as a place in the Scottish Challenge Cup, which means Cardiff could play north of the border next season.

A mixed side of fringe and youth players is expected to be fielded when Cardiff enter at the round one stage next week, with the first team fully focused on their South Wales derby with Swansea City.

Potential opponents for Cardiff could include Taffs Well, of whom the two sides have played three times in pre-season friendlies, as well as Llanelli Town, who are managed by cult hero Andy Legg.

The round one draw will take place tomorrow with ties to take place on the weekend of December 11/12 as Bluebirds fans wait in anticipation on the possibility of stars rocking up to grounds of their local sides.

Cardiff have not competed in a Welsh domestic competition since the FAW Premier Cup, which ended in 2008.

Meanwhile, the first team have been drawn away at Championship rivals Nottingham Forest in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup with the tie due to take place in early January.

Good opportunity to play the youngsters and players needing game time.

Benkovic may finally get a game!

By no means are the welsh premier teams a fantastic standard, but games against the top 4/5 would be decent for some of the age grade players.

Likewise access to the Scottish league cup, again not the highest standard ever, but a good test nevertheless.

Hopefully we’ll finally see benkovic. At this point I’m not sure he really exists

I think we might have made him up

There is a conspiracy going around stating Benkovic doesn't actually exist.

Is this right?

Would give anything to see City in Europe. I'm too young to remember them on their last jaunt :bluescarf:

Pretty sure the winners dont get a Europa league entry

does anyone if we have accepted the invitation or not ? the first line says we have been invited, then it says we have been enetered into it.

i think it would be a great idea for us, especially to give some of the younger lads some real competitve games, as U23 games do not anything really for development.

winners do not go into Europa league, however it would still be nice to see us lift a trophy in my opinion

And would be a good trip to Scotland for the bluebirds if they win it.

Depends if Scotland gets a second referendum but that's as European as it will get. Win this and we qualify for Scottish league cup but that has no further qualification.

That said, I've been on about City should have a B-side for our youth development in the LoW for forever, this could potentially open the door for that happening?

Then all they need to do is make it a summer league and my work here will be one. Imagine it, having a Cardiff City to get frustrated and annoyed about 12 months of the year. Footy heaven

On an almost completely different tangent, a mate of mine is a coach for a kids league Barnes Eagles and keeps pushing them to change their Suffix from Eagles to Alona which I think is genius.

Don't think it's relevant to this conversation at all though, but not really one that comes up in regular conversation.

no mate the whole LOW thing does not work... rules were changed in 1993 , and infact voted for by LOW clubs that closed this back door into Europe permanently...hence us no longer playing the the Welsh cup.. no more penny and the bun im afraid...

Thats a shame, would raise the bar a long way if us and Swansea had B sides in there, rising tide lifts all boats and all that.

Cut off there noses to spite their faces just like the Scottish League did when they voted Rangers out IMHO but it well is what it is I guess

was not quite as straight forward as that... i think the FAW were seeking more than just the 1 place in European competitions...and UEFA were putting pressure the other way for us to have a proper national league...resulted in Newport and 2 of the North Wales clubs being exiled ... anyway the long and short of it is we can no longer field teams in 2 national leagues....we had done in the past, Cardiff City reserves have actually won the Welsh League....

Interesting didnt known that mate

Is there anything stopping us having a feeder side though like we have in Belgium and Slovenia or have did the rules put in place essentially bar us from any involvement?

i think Brexit is going to put pay to that idea.... new rules on foreign players have this week been announced... its going to be based on a points system... i havent looked hard at it but at first glance its seems people like glatzel, immers, zohore, camarasa. wouldnt have got the required points.... so its defo going to change football a bit..
