While this is true I’ve looked into it and actually it has rarely provided quality players. They are an exception rather than the rule. Certainly since we have been in higher echelons of the football league and it very much precedes Tan buying us.
So this is a chronological order of academy players who played more than 30 games for the club and were sold after the year 2000.
Robert Earnshaw - league debut 1998.
James Collins - league debut 2000.
Joe Ledley - league debut 2004.
Chris Gunter - league debut 2006.
Darcy Blake - league debut 2007.
Aaron Ramsey - league debut 2007.
Adam Matthews - league debut 2009.
Declan John - league debut 2013.
Others like Cameron Jerome, Joe Ralls were signed as youngsters but weren’t developed by the academy.
My conclusions are that the current issues with the academy developing players for the first team is not new no matter how much people want to portray is as a failing of the current owner. There were two players on that list who came from
our academy who made first team debuts prior to Sam Hamamm taking over the club however quite clearly there is an impact from his ownership of the club, he also had a lot of experience in this as it was the Wimbledon way to develop talent and sell them on. Despite his bullish remarks about not selling the Crown Jewels we did in fact sell a lot of our talent and to clubs who should apparently have been our feeder clubs.
What I found interesting was the amount of debuts that came under the management of Dave Jones who was renowned as a manager who didn’t like playing the youth.
But as it clearly shows aside from Declan John we haven’t had an impactful (and arguable whether he was impactful) academy player in the first team since Aaron Ramsey in 2007 and he was always going to better places. But whereas this is the case under the current owner I have seen some of the best players play at my club since Rambo so it’s swings and roundabouts ain’t it?
It really is grim reading isn’t it? We aren’t doing anything really differently now. Merely continuing what has gone on before.

South East Wales { infact Wales as a whole } as an area has never produced a glut of talent.... had it, our national side would have been historically better and far less dependent on players with only loose connections with our country...
the golden era for the want of a better phrase had not happened prior and has not since... maybe its just the talent is not there...

Although During this some of our best South Walian talent was stolen by other clubs.
Bale and Bellamy specifically.

that has always happened and happens all over the UK.. even now, the best player at the academy was Matondo... gone...
tbh i read threads on here where the posters main points are agenda based not really academy based....and the expectation levels are too high...having said that Harris came out with 11 local boys last week which is something id not expect any coach at any level to be saying...

They have moved most of the u18s to the u23s this season making a very young squad playing against older more experienced players. The average age of cardiffs u23s this year is 19.02 . The league average is 21.05. They will come good next season with more experience and physical growth.
In 2019 the u18s won the league but that seems to be conveniently ignored by some.

Not sure stolen is a fair word for the likes of bellamy. How active were Cardiff in their pursuit?. I knew someone who was with him at the same time at Norwich. I believe they travelled back and forth from here. The guy I knew was a decent player at that age and Cardiff never came in for him despite playing in South Wales at the same time. A lad can only go where they are wanted. If Cardiff didnt make a decent approach i dont think its fair to say they were stolen.
