NEIL HARRIS:

"MARK HARRIS POSITIVITY HAS RUBBED OFF ON THE REST OF THE TEAM"

How's the mood in camp?

"As you can imagine, players coming in yesterday were extremely pleased with their performance, individually and collectively, a right buzz about the place. Being on the training pitch it was really positive. Strong performance but the same again needed tomorrow."

"Mark Harris positivity has rubbed off massively on the rest of the team."

What did you do right?

Scored the first goal! That’s key. It doesn’t make a performance or result. Certainly helps in the Championship to score the first goal.

We looked solid and reliable. A little more proactive in our play. We knew Luton were going to be physical, same as Huddersfield.

Hence we went with two centre-forwards, scoring those two early goals gave us a foundation.

We found passes and got into space.

Siege mentality if you go to Watford etc. in the future?

Naturally, it will appear in my team talk at some stage. We will need to see what comes back in the next 24 hours. We will have more of an idea.

Cardiff City Stadium, only going to be 2,000 or 4,000 there, people will say it won’t make much difference. It will!

So at Watford I would try and use it to my advantage.

Relentless fixtures?

We don’t want to be six points away from the play-offs, we want to be right in the mix.

We haven’t earned the right so far, we need consistency.

At the moment, one game at a time. We have to be at our best to beat Huddersfield.

Similar tomorrow?

That would be lovely! Three points would be my demand for the players.

The players reacted superbly against Luton. But it’s one game.

That’s what I want to see from them consistently

NEIL HARRIS:

You were open last week, talk too premature?

I can’t control that. That’s the society we live in. That’s the world of football. I accept that as a manager.

I was honest, results have not been good enough. We have not climbed up the mountain and come out the other side just because we beat Luton 4-0. It’s finding that consistency.

We need to win games of football because we are not where we want to be and we have still got a long way to go.

The group take the praise from Saturday, but that’s all it is, from Saturday.

Saturday has now gone, it’s Monday and we are preparing for Tuesday. Tomorrow night is all that matters now.

We have to put the same standards, level of professionalism, need to show the ability with and without the ball which we showed on the weekend.

That’s the standards I expect from my team at Cardiff City every game.

Clash of heads, does football need to do more?

I’ve not seen Alan’s quotes, but I’ve seen the incident (Arsenal vs Wolves).

Dementia, I’ve seen some stats and things about young players not heading the football, I’m all for that.

But it is a competitive sport, competitive game.

You’re not allowed to put your boot up now, aerial challenges are now deemed more serious. The game is more about intercepting than tackles now.

Older players have had to adapt their game. You’re going to get incidents like yesterday, that’s not going to change, unless it becomes below-head-high football.

Motor racing yesterday, the crash. It’s professional sport. How we change it is down to the governing bodies.

NEIL HARRIS:

Fans coming back in, might be within sight, but we don’t know in Wales..?

It’s really tough, because I have to be respectful to living under Welsh law and decisions made by different people.

We have to do what’s best for the nation of Wales. But if you put countries to one side and put it to football.

I find it really tough that some places are allowed 4,000 fans and some aren’t allowed any.

If us and Swansea are going to play other Championship teams and you’re allowed 4,000, then 6,000, then 10,000, then we can’t have any, that’s a loss to us. That’s a disadvantage to us and Swansea.

If it’s going to be done on tiers, I understand that. But if it’s going to be 90 other clubs can do it and you three, including Newport, can’t, we are going to be left behind.

NEIL HARRIS:

Two-pronged, support and financial?

You’re right. The financial gain from it, or the loss that Vincent has to pay the bill for. It is a hit to the football club.

The financial world is different as well, having fans helps you. It will be a big aid to us.

The financial side affects the manager as well, because it might affect the transfer window. Recruiting or not recruiting, it is borderline.

It is a big call, what is going to happen in the coming weeks.

Sparky the bright spark

Monday 30th November 2020

When Mark Harris' name was written on the Bluebirds team sheet, there was a mixture of excitement and trepidation.

It was exciting in that Neil Harris had entrusted an academy product to lead the line alongside Kieffer Moore, but a tension owing to an untried, untested youngster starting such an important game in the context of the season and the manager's tenure.

But from the very off, the 21-year-old they call 'Sparky' was bright, energetic and his body was clearly coursing with adrenaline and a desire to impress.

The manager said back in September that Harris offers that little something different, a striker who runs off the shoulder and stretches the opposition defence, and that is exactly what he brought against Luton.

His striker's instincts to make clever runs into the channels and anticipate flick-ons from his towering strike partner Moore wreaked havoc all afternoon and City's forward players reaped the benefits.

Vincent Tan's vision for the club is to up the Welsh contingent, providing a far greater proportion of Wales' squad than they have done in recent years. Well, on Saturday, Cardiff started with four Welshmen - Harris, Moore, Harry Wilson and Will Vaulks.

A statistic I came across on Twitter also informed me that the last time two Welshmen scored in the same game for Cardiff City was May 4, 2008, when goals from Paul Parry and Joe Ledley contributed to a 3-0 win over Barnsley.

Moore and Harris corrected that statistic against Luton.

There are things young Harris has to learn, of course, he made the odd wrong decision, notably when he attempted to capitalise on Simon Sluga's slip and opted for the shot rather than sliding in Moore for an easy tap-in, and sometimes attempted the spectacular when the simple option was the best.

But who can blame him? He was brimming with confidence after his early goal.

On the whole, you cannot knock his performance at all. His youthful exuberance, unjaded by the start of the campaign, was like fresh air and long may that continue.

A penny for Robert Glatzel's thoughts, too, given he came for a hefty price tag just over a year ago and is yet to truly settle, as he watched on from the bench. He has been searching for some form this season and with City tyro Harris now in the fray, his job just got a little more difficult.

NEIL HARRIS:

Would you support a co-ordinated approach?

100%. Yes, my focus is Cardiff City, but sport in general is widely affected. So many industries are.

Sports, rugby, we love the rugby here, no fans in affects them financially and the passion of the game. We want to see fans in the ground.

A co-ordinated attack would be good. It’s hard for people at the top to make decisions.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing in life, but how long do you leave it before sporting industries dwindle further? That’s a big thing for the sporting world.

We need the fans back.

How has Mark Harris been in training, spring in his step?

NEIL HARRIS:

Yeah, he has always got a spring in his step because he is young and trains with a passion and a purpose.

Whether you’re 21 or 36, when you play in the team you always feel that your standing and stock rises.

Mark came in Sunday and bounced in the building. It’s great to see a young man who is desperate to do well get a chance and produce.

The reaction of the players when he scored and after the game and in the changing room afterwards says it all really.

Everyone was pleased for him.

As I said to him when he came off, ‘You’ve set the standard, same as everybody else, you can’t fall below that. Don’t change it.’

If you want to play this level and above that’s what you’ve got to achieve.

Team news, everyone come through unscathed?

Yes. No issues, knocks and niggles, couple I’ve got to wait until the last minute on but I’m hopeful everyone will be fit.

I’ll have a much better idea tomorrow at quarter past five.

Does that positivity rub off on the squad?

I think positive energy infiltrated the team performance on the weekend. He ran, he ran and he ran and he ran.

He played with his brain as well, making runs at the right time, and that rubbed off on the team.

That rubs off on the team effect afterwards and I’ve seen that. He kept his game simple but hugely effective.

Players are like fans, they appreciate that sort of thing and that’s why they were so pleased with him.

That’s got to be his standards and it does rub off on people.

NEIL HARRIS:

Set-piece goals, anything change?

You look at teams and we want to score different types of goals. Teams go through spells of scoring different types of goals.

After lockdown we scored a lot from open play. We didn’t have a penalty in 11 and a half months.

You go through spells.

Did we change much? Well I’m not going to say too much, because people will be listening, watching and reading, but it becomes about the delivery, timing and desire - and a little bit of luck as well.

We nailed it at the weekend and if we are going to be successful this season then we have got to find different ways of scoring goals.

Moments of magic, set plays and the counter attack as well.

Most important thing is players’ health?

NEIL HARRIS:

It’s a real tough one. Players will say they are fine and want to get on with it, doctors got protocols to follow.

See the concussion tests, some work really well. The protocols in place say the game has changed.

David Luiz has obviously said he is OK to carry on, someone should be telling him to get off. But there must be some trust in players.

I got a few whacks, broke my nose, cracked head. It’s part of the game. My heart skips a beat when I see challenges, head injuries, late tackles. There are so few now compared to when I started playing 25 years ago.

But they are trying to make it safer. You don’t want to change the excitement and adrenaline in the game.

All we are trying to do is make it more risk-free. But there is always going to be contact.

Jordi Osei-Tutu, can we expect him this side of Christmas?

I wouldn’t have thought so.

He is doing great. A strong lad, a great pro, but we are unlikely to see him before Boxing Day.

Re: BREAKING NEIL HARRIS:

Under the differing rules in Wales and England, some of Cardiff and Swansea's Championship rivals will be able to stage home games with fans, albeit in modest numbers. The same goes for Newport County and Wrexham in their respective leagues.
