OT: F1 MIRACLES DO HAPPEN...!

Sun Nov 29, 2020 2:35 pm

Just saw start of Bahrain Grand Prix and Grojean crash!

Need take look at crash and the car, if you can call it a car afterwards? Back half in one piece on track front half completely gone buried in crash barrier he walked away despite car bursting into flames at same time ? Can only describe it as a miracle he's alive never mind walking away... :o

Allan, I'm watching the race (or should I say watched Part One) and that was a huge impact that in years gone by would have resulted in fatality, as it was the much criticised 'Halo' that stopped the barrier literally decapitating him; never mind the effects of the resulting fireball

We thank the man above that he survived with some broken ribs and minor burns to hands and feet!

A sobering reminder that F1 (and all motorsport) is a dangerous occupation and maybe explains why they earn their money for what is often our entertainment  :notworthy: :o

Yes seen more film of the aftermath and mind boggles that he wasnt killed no matter how safe they design cars not sure they considered 140mph straight into a barrier and going through it in their scenarios... apparently the halo opened up the barrier so he went through it instead of his head hitting barrier...... only part of front of car left was the cockpit totally burnt out !

God bless the halo device, without it I suspect the outcome wouldn’t bare thinking about...

You have to admire the mindset of the other drivers, to just get on with it as if nothing has happened, after an accident like that.

Can see how F1 technology make the cars we use safer! But How strong is the halo to survive intact after 140mph bump?

Copied from the fia page:

‘The Halo has to withstand 125 kiloNewtons of force (equivalent to 12 tonnes in weight) from above for five seconds without a failure to any part of the survival cell or the mountings. It must also withstand forces of 125 kN from the side. Without question, it is now the strongest element on a Formula One car.’

As terrifying as that accident is to watch, it’s testimony to the strength of the cars these days. Not dissimilar to the way Ott Tanak’s accident in Rally Monte Carlo, earlier this year, showed with wrc cars.

Being in a tank would have been only way he survived today in similar circumstances.. :o
