Pressure from above?

NEIL HARRIS:

Yeah, ultimately, Vincent [Tan], Mehmet [Dalman], Ken [Choo], Steve Borley, they are the ones who count. Everyone is entitled to an opinion in modern society, I get that, but, to me, what matters is what we build in-house, within our changing room. But also what the thought process is of above.

I spoke to the board, they want success. Mehmet spoke a couple of months ago about January, being in the top six and wanting to challenge and that’s a realistic expectation for us. That’s my job to deliver that.

I understand that and a football manager needs to win football matches.

Harris

NEIL HARRIS:

Fitness problem?

No. The build-up of minutes, three games in a week. Other than that we are good. Bruised egos, broken hearts, but other than that we are good.

Fans can expect changes tomorrow?

I’m not going to sit here and talk about making changes when the opposition are hanging on every word I say. Ultimately, it wasn’t a good performance at Coventry. When we conceded the goal, the subs didn’t have the impact I’d hoped for and the performance wasn’t what I’d hoped for. The last half hour wasn’t good enough, the hour before wasn’t either. But it wasn’t the levels I expected.

NEIL HARRIS:

You said you’d been too loyal, time to change?

Yeah, quite possibly. I am quite passionate after games, which is a strength and weakness of mine. I spoke with passion from the heart. When you watch it back and reflect… yes, loyal to some players is a strength because you want them to feel comfortable. I’ve been quite consistent with personnel and we hadn’t got the results I’d hoped for. It’s not back to the drawing board and ripping everything up. It’s about making adjustments for various reasons.

NEIL HARRIS:

Time the players played for you?

I’d like to think so. When you’re a manager and you’re not getting results, questions come flying your way about your tenure, you want that group siege mentality. That means the manager supporting the players and the players supporting the manager. Over the last 13 months I’ve been critical of the players, that’s my job to demand more, there are times the players have not been happy with me as well, when I leave them out. But we are close. I didn’t say that to them directly. We have enough leaders in the group to take collective responsibility. The lads know the results aren’t good enough for what we expect. We know the demands of the football club and the good lads and good pros stand up and be counted when that happens

NEIL HARRIS:

Pressure to deliver, any part of you that feels you are playing to keep your job?

Yeah there is, of course. If I answer that straight question with a straight answer, the realism is yes, that is football. Let’s be realistic. You asked me the question because that’s what you think and that’s what most people think.

As a football fan I understand it. If you’re not getting the results then criticism comes your way as a football manager and as a dressing room. People only bend so far.

I love my job, I really, really enjoy working with the group. But you have to get results as a manager.

I think this is a big period for me, the club and the group, the next couple of games. I put expectations on my own shoulders and I need players my to deliver and I need to get big calls right.

NEIL HARRIS

Speak to the board since Wednesday?

I spoke to Vincent yesterday, talked through what went wrong and where we can improve. He cares, he’s interested. He’s invested a lot of money into the football club and had huge success in doing it as well. He wants to be successful.

We built that last season, we built that expectation when he brought me into the club. Naturally, you want the same again. He knows my personality, work ethic and that’s why he brought me in.

But, ultimately, he wants the club to be successful and I know that.

NEIL HARRIS:

Big game, you need results, what have you got to do to change results?

I think we have tried to change the way we’ve played and approach games, the style of play. The majority of it has been really good. The two penalty areas have been the problem. We’ve not scored enough, we’ve conceded the first goal too often. When we have conceded the first goal it’s because we have made errors. I’ve asked players to adapt their play. I may have to be a little more pragmatic in my approach to some players. We have to find a way of putting teams under more pressure. I have to consider personnel, style of play, formation, all those things considered from a Wednesday to a Saturday.

NEIL HARRIS:

Did so well to get to the play-offs, this is really your first dodgy spell as Cardiff manager, how are you coping?

I’m fine. I want to win. On Wednesday I didn’t sleep very well after the game. We talk about the pressure of football management, but I love my job. I want to win games. Back in December, January time we had a lot of draws, the 6-1 at QPR and there was restlessness then. But then we showed we moved in the right direction. Whenever I have had quiet spells I have always come out the other side. If we are to do that it needs to start tomorrow. The work we put in is diligent and I care about the football club and want to be part of it. I spoke to the players today, spoke from the heart to show them I care and I know they do as well.

NEIL HARRIS:

Fans coming back, can’t come soon enough for you?

Yeah, of course. We have been a club that has missed them this season, certainly financially, but I just think mentally. Every football fan deserves the right to watch their team play. We all understand the pandemic, but if Cardiff as a city is in a good place then why shouldn’t fans be allowed in? There shouldn’t be a difference between the four nations but we understand each ruling body is different. We could certainly do with that lift.

Re: NEIL HARRIS:

Fri Nov 27, 2020 12:54 pm

NEIL HARRIS:

What’s it going to take to come through it and get back on track?

I think we can’t underestimate the first-goal mentality. At the moment, without that fan base in the home and away games, the first goal is really key. We have done that too often.

We have been masters of our own downfall. We’ve conceded 13 goals in 13 games which isn’t a lot. Ultimately, we have given poor goals away and then we are not efficient or ruthless enough at the other end. When I talked about being loyal to players and the way we play, rightly so because you have to believe in what you do. I’m not going to say too much but I have to look at it and say you have to change certain things, just adjusting. We have to adjust. Sometimes you put your hands up and say you need to adjust and look at different scenarios.

Re: NEIL HARRIS:

NEIL HARRIS:

Do you chase the first goal?

We talk about tinkering what we do. Just slightly adjust what we do to make us more reliable as a defensive unit, a team, but also still carry that goal threat going forward, that’s the balance I have to get right.

Re: NEIL HARRIS:

Fri Nov 27, 2020 12:56 pm

NEIL HARRIS:

How have the lads been since your harsh words?

Yeah, they are great.

It’s not a lack of good people, good lads, you speak to them, they are good lads, they care. They show it in different ways, some run through a brick wall some show it in different ways.

When a manager puts it on them and speaks passionately, then you expect them to respond.

They’ve come in today, a few bruised egos, disappointed, but we will see tomorrow if there is a response and the leadership in the dressing room.

Whenever we have had disappointment before, the players have always bounced back for me.

Against QPR they bounced back in the second half, then into Barnsley and so on. The back end of last season too.

I expect a reaction from the group and we need to find that consistency.

Tomorrow, I look forward to seeing how my players respond.

Re: NEIL HARRIS:

NEIL HARRIS:

Players on social media, they will have seen the fans’ reactions, how do you manage that?

Well, firstly, if they don’t like the criticism, don’t do social media.

I’m not on social media, if I want to talk to anyone I’ll give them a call! As a player, if you play well, you are going to get 10,000 messages praising you, if you miss a penalty and lose 1-0 there is going to be 10,000 slating you.

The players know what’s right and what’s wrong so I certainly don’t need to address that with them.

Re: NEIL HARRIS:

Fri Nov 27, 2020 1:16 pm

NEIL HARRIS:

How is it managing without feedback from fans?

I think, when I talk to you guys I try to be really honest. You portray my words and personality to the fan base. I try and be honest because of that, I don’t necessarily need fans in the stadium to know what the opinion of the fan base is going to be! I know at the moment there is an impatience among fans. I am kept abreast of some things. But they want success and I know they are not going to be happy at the moment. Some won’t want to see me at the club and everyone will have an opinion on team selection. That’s why we love football. The Bristol game, for example, when we conceded after three minutes and they didn’t get in our half after that and you need that passionate fan base to get you over the line.

Everything Neil Harris said after Cardiff City 'shambles' at Coventry City

Cardiff City slumped to yet another defeat after a sloppy mistake proved costly in a 1-0 loss to Coventry City.

It leaves the Bluebirds scrapping at the bottom of the table, coming in way below fans' expectations following a terrific back end to the last campaign.

The pressure seems to be turning up a notch on the City manager, with a few massive games ahead in the coming week.

Here is everything Harris said following the defeat at St Andrew's.

Q. Your assessment of that?

Neil Harris: "That wasn't good enough. It certainly wasn't the level of performance we've been putting in the last couple of weeks.

"The goal probably sums us up, really, masters of our own downfall, giving the ball away cheaply.

"The goal was just a shambles really and that summed us up, we didn't do enough with the football to hurt the opponent often enough."

Q. What did you say afterwards?

NH: "I was quite aggressive in what I said, showed my disappointment.

"We have got a talented group of players who need to show they want to play for the club more, in my opinion.

"Responsibility falls with me, I've got no issue with that, I pick the team. But sometimes, as a manager, you need your players to perform and tonight they didn't perform.

"I'm the first person to defend and praise the players and the group. Today as a group we weren't good enough.

"It hurts me to say that, but it was a below-par performance and we've not come off the back of four or five wins in a row to put in a below-par performance.

"We have to be better."

ALSO BOTH NOT YES MEN.

Go for Craig Bellamy or Eddie Howe - Cardiff City fans call for change

By Glen Williams

Friday 27th November 2020

Cardiff City fans are calling for a change of manager as pressure mounts on Neil Harris' shoulders after another Championship defeat on Wednesday night.

And the popular names being put forward are those of Bluebirds icon Craig Bellamy, or Eddie Howe who did such a fabulous job at Bournemouth.

The Bluebirds went down 1-0 to Coventry City at St Andrew's, conceding a goal which completely sums them up at present - the sequence of events was basic, error-strewn and far too pedestrian - which allowed Tyler Walker to score.

Harris had spoken in the build-up to the fixture about the "excellent" football Cardiff had played at times so far this season but supporters will find it hard to see evidence of that statement.

With one of the best squads in the division Cardiff and Harris find themselves wallowing in 18th position, nine points off the play-off places in a far-from-stellar league this year.

It is still early days and in a division where fortunes can turn on a sixpence the Bluebirds may still get back on track under Harris' stewardship by going on a good run of form.

But it is evident that something major has to change, and Cardiff supporters themselves have been discussing that very point in their droves on social media.

Some fans want change in the dugout, with a couple of big names mentioned, with one dominating the conversation.

THE CCFC BOARD SAY THEY WANT A WELSHMAN TO LEAD THE ACCADEMY/ LOCAL
PLAYERS AND BUILD A WELSH CARDIFF CITY TEAM :bluebird: :bluebird:

Former Reading boss Mark Bowen is ready to lead a Welsh revolution at Cardiff City - should current Bluebirds boss Neil Harris be shown the door.

Londonder Harris' position at the Cardiff City Stadium is hanging by the thinnest of threads after just three Championship wins this season - and Bowen is primed to answer City's SOS, with ex-Manchester City and Wales star Craig Bellamy in as coaching support.

Bowen, now 56, led Reading from the relegation precipice to mid-table Championship safety last term - but resigned his position as Royals Director of Football after Chinese Club owner Dai Youngge appointed 43-year-old Serb Veljko Paunovic.

Bowen, who was tracked by Swansea as a potential replacement for Graham Potter last year, is now ready to use his coaching skill honed at Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR, Stoke and Southampton.

Former Cardiff forward Bellamy would be tempted to depart Belgium club Anderlecht to join ex-Norwich defender Bowen, capped 41 times by Wales, in the Welsh capital - with current Bluebirds destroyer Sol Bamba making up the Bluebirds coaching team.

Bowen would power current Cardiff fledglings Joel Bagan, Mark Harris, and, as a matter of urgency, the most promising Bluebirds kids forward into the first-team frame - with a major concentration on the Welsh-born players.

MARK BOWEN:

He reflected, "I am from Neath and am now a Welsh grandad of two weeks. I am a proud Welshman and would love the opportunity to lead Wales' capital club back to the Premier League.

" I took Craig with us to Blackburn and Man City. He is going to be one of the great football minds of the future - and I know he'd love to make a big contribution at Cardiff.

" He has always loved the club - he has openly shown that in the past."

Mark Bowen has:

Worked in premier league for 17 years and well over 500 games there as a coach.

Only a short time working in the championship with first Birmingham and then last year Reading FC BUT got promotion with Birmingham and took Reading from 23rd when arrived to 14th !

Win percentage working in the championship is 45% !

Joel Bagan signed new deal, any other contract talks planned?

I think there’s been talks behind the scenes with some of the players. Greg not so much because he has been out with injury. Joe Bennett and Junior Hoilett have had discussions already. We are in a very difficult scenario in the pandemic in that we don’t know where we will be in a couple of months. We might have to sit tight and see what the new year brings.
