" NEIL HARRIS: ARE THE PLAYERS DOING ENOUGH FOR ME? "

NEIL HARRIS:

"Are people showing enough to me? That they want to play and deserve to play? I have got to consider that. There are players who make the right noises about wanting to play, but it's doing it when you go out on the pitch."

By Glen Williams

Below is everything Neil Harris said in his post-match press conference following the 1-0 defeat to Coventry City.

Your assessment of that?

That wasn't good enough. It certainly wasn't the level of performance we've been putting in the last couple of weeks.

The goal probably sums us up, really, masters of our own downfall, giving the ball away cheaply.

The goal was just a shambles really and that summed us up, we didn't do enough with the football to hurt the opponent often enough.

What did you say afterwards?

I was quite aggressive in what I said, showed my disappointment.

We have got a talented group of players who need to show they want to play for the club more, in my opinion.

Responsibility falls with me, I've got no issue with that, I pick the team. But sometimes, as a manager, you need your players to perform and tonight they didn't perform.

I'm the first person to defend and praise the players and the group. Today as a group we weren't good enough.

It hurts me to say that, but it was a below-par performance and we've not come off the back of four or five wins in a row to put in a below-par performance.

We have to be better.

Where do you see your position now?

Where do I see the season? It's a disappointing start, let's be honest. We haven't got as many points as we expected, as I expected.

I don't need to listen to anyone else, I judge myself. You can see in my tone of voice I am disappointed with tonight.

We have got nowhere near as many points as I thought we'd have. We need to improve quickly, that's football.

Games are coming thick and fast, you hope to be given the chance to turn it around on Saturday?

We look forward to Saturday and the opportunity for us to turn it around and improve, to get results recent performances deserved, not tonight's performance.

But two home games at Cardiff City Stadium where we need to put in performances like against Barnsley and the back end of last season - and that starts against Luton.

We are all disappointed. We all want better.

I understand the world we live in and the football industry. I am the manager, I take responsibility on behalf of the football club and on behalf of my changing room.

I understand we have to take responsibility and be accountable for the results.

What I will say is that I thoroughly enjoy my job and I always say it's a privileged position. We always want to be better and that starts Saturday against Luton and then Huddersfield.

What about selection changes for Luton on Saturday?

Possibly I need to now. I've been loyal to players and rightly so, because we have got good players.

We miss key players but still got enough involved to be getting better results than we are. I'm certainly not hiding behind that.

I've got to look at team selection for Saturday now.

Are people showing enough to me? That they want to play and deserve to play? I have got to consider that. There are players who make the right noises about wanting to play, but it's doing it when you go out on the pitch.

Your message to fans?

I understand we all want better, me included.

We've shown better. We've risen expectation by our performances and results last season and excitement and euphoria for this season and we haven't performed.

I am accountable for that and I'll be working every minute of the day to make it better moving forward.

Only way to have performance like last season is to play like last season but he refuses to do it time after time... as for loyalty to players it's more about putting players in positions they are best at theres at least 4 players playing either out position or not in preferred position on pitch! And must not forget his persistent must not lose game mentality that means we are predictable to extent that teams wait for mistakes like tonight because they know we wont be a threat to them until 75mins .... so easy to play against is best sums it up

And he'll still pick the same players next week.

He says he will look at team selection Saturday, I really hope hope he doesn't. An emergency board meeting is needed to remove him. The players have no respect for him, he can't motivate them. That said some of the players are a disgrace this season too. There are some hugely paid senior players who are going through the motions and the level of mistakes we are making is appalling. A new voice in the changing room is required. Perhaps the captaincy from Morrison also needs looking at, where is the leadership from him at the moment?

He's lucky that there have been no fans to watch this shower of shit. They would have been bombarded with abuse.
City fans will put up with a lack of ability, but not a lack of effort.
It's embarrassing.

If he’s questioning the players then that’s clear evidence he’s losing or lost the dressing room.
If so that can’t go on; city have 9 (nine) games between Saturday and end of the year.
Something positive has to happen and the board need to get it right.
My fear is their almost total lack of footballing knowledge will mean they’ll stick rather than twist and just hope Harris can turn it around.

He won't change anything. He'll start the same back 4 that have been pissing goals all season and probably drop Murphy. Harris can identify problems but has shown he is incapable of addressing them. This team needs drastic changes and Harris hasn't got the bottle to do it.

At least he brought on Mark Harris earlier this time, last time it was 90+5 and this time it was 90+4. Glad he decided to give him a good run out.

Only managed to do that because of injury to their keeper in injury time otherwise wouldn't have been used! :o

Its not about the players not doing it for him, its about him dumping on the players.

Just on percentages, how often do you think Morrison will under hit or over hit a pass 2%~ 8% ? So if you give him 30~ 40 passes a game he will mess up at least once, in the oppositions final third. I doubt if Warnock allowed him 30~40 passes all season.

Again with Joe Ralls how often will his technique let him down in a game 2 or 4 times, if its in the middle third looking at goals there will be back up behind him, but in yesterdays position the bobbly back pass cost us, the resultant defending was inexcusable but i think he panicked and tried to save the situation and failed.

In Warnock ball Smithies smashes upfield to Moore, even if Moore loses his battle, Ralls is there with his back to Smithies totally intent on winning the second ball...He is very good at that. He gets it, controls, looks up passes it the any of the three attacking midfielders then we go. There is nothing wrong with that. It works.

We just don't have the players to manage the transition between thirds and i am a fan not a football professional. WTF is he trying to do or see that we don't ?

Hes a rabbit cought in the headlights and doesnt know which way to go! He can see the problem as he refers to last season when things worked but he doesnt or cant make the decision to pick the players or tactics to be as successful as end of last season ... Saturday will tell if hes seen the light on these things.

In fairness, he said about creating a pathway, he hasnt said that it is done yet, just he was changing things regards that.
That said,if results dont change fast,he wont be here to see that through, then it starts again, with new people, who may decide to have another clearout!!

I'd give him until end of season at least IMO. Let's see what the January window brings especially in midfield. Hopefully NH won't be another Slade and waste two seasons (and two seasons of my season ticket money!). If he believes the players are letting him down then he needs to look at himself and his backroom staff first before wholesale changes.
