Seven boys from Cardiff arrested following violent disorder in city centre

Tuesday 24th November 2020

The violent incident that left some in hospital with stab wounds involved two groups of teenagers from the Grangetown and Rumney areas of the city

Two groups of teenagers from different areas of Cardiff were involved in the violent disorder in the city centre at the weekend, police have said.

South Wales Police say seven boys have now been arrested in connection with the incident that left six people in hospital with various injuries including stab wounds and head injuries.

Detectives say two groups of teenagers, from the Grangetown and Rumney areas of the city, some who had come into the city centre armed with knives, were involved. The disorder began in Queen Street at around 9.50pm on Saturday.

On Tuesday police said the boys, all aged 16 and 17, have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

More arrests are anticipated and police are looking through CCTV from the area as part of the investigation.

Detective Superintendent Esyr Jones, from South Wales Police, said: "It is still early days in terms of the investigation but we are forming a picture of what has happened on Saturday.

"Two groups of young people have come into the city centre, some with knives, and the result is an unacceptable level of violence.

"We are still trawling through vast amounts of CCTV and speaking to a number of witnesses and we will be relentless in identifying and arresting all those involved.

"As part of the wider investigation and to ensure Cardiff remains a safe place for all families will be visited and offered support to help divert young people away from serious violence and knife crime."

Of the six taken to hospital three – two aged 16 and one aged 17 – remain in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Drakeford wants to give these kids the vote. To decide who runs the country.

If they have the right to vote, then they have the right to be treated as adults, and tried and imprisoned as adults in an adult prison.

What a very strange connection to make :?

Are all 16 and 17 year olds committing crimes these days?
Did none of the 30 million voters in last year's GE have a criminal past?
Do you support taking away the right to vote for those with a criminal past?

What an odd argument saying that 7 teens being arrested is a reason nearly 80,000 16 and 17 year olds shouldn't be allowed to vote.

At 16 you can:
Get married or register a civil partnership.
You can consent to sexual activity with others aged 16 and over.
Get a National Insurance number.
Join a trade union.
Leave education.
Work full-time.
Be paid national minimum wage for 16/17 year olds.
Join the Armed Forces with parental consent
Leave home with or without parental consent
In certain circumstances you start paying for prescriptions, dental treatment and eye tests
Consent to medical treatment
Buy a lottery ticket
Apply for a passport without parental consent
Pay taxes

At 17 you can:
Drive most vehicles and pilot a helicopter or plane
No longer be subject to a care order
Become a blood donor
Be interviewed by the Police without an adult present.
Leave your body for medical study if you die
Join the armed forces without parental consent

Why can someone, work, pay taxes, join the military, gamble, drink, leave home, marry, etc before they get the right to vote? There are 16 and 17 year olds who are complete idiots as seen this weekend in town, but that's the same in every age group. There are some brilliant and talented 16 and 17 year olds as well who are already being treated like adults in almost every aspect of life, why is letting them vote so bad?

I think 16 and 17 year old should be allowed to vote.

But I would agree when you say that they should also be treated by the criminal justice system as adults, if they are given a vote.

Dirty tricks such as allowing 16 year olds to vote? The same people who in 1 year or 2 years will be allowed to vote anyway.
As for Brainwashed? Please elaborate.

Push the voting age UP not take it down...

They won't appreciate it until much later in life but let them live their youth, make errors and be able to reflect on them before having a then (at least partially) educated say!

Sorry, but I'm one to up the ages of driving and other 'responsible' activities, too!

Totally agree, 18 as a minimum for driving and voting, and most of the other things on the list!

Voting age needs to go up not down

Not really - it's down to a level of intelligence and maturity. BUT most of them havent got a clue about politics - other than they think going on a protest and expecting everything for nothing is 'normal'

That's why Drakeford wants to give them the vote - they are in his party's demographic. And on the whole just following what there Dad has told them - rather than basing it on real experiences , maybe having to run a company, turn a profit, get sales etc.

The idiots involved in these incidents will not be A. Intelligent students going well at school or B. The opposite.

Time will tell when they have their day in court.

So too young to buy fireworks but considered old enough to vote
SNP, Plaid, Welsh Labour would reduce the voting age to 8 if they could, generation on generation kids are maturing later
