Club Appointment | David Hughes

Cardiff City FC is very pleased to announce the appointment of former Bluebirds defender David Hughes as Academy Head of Coaching From U9 to U23'S.

So now David Hughes will be the head coach.

(Steve Morrison was appointed head coach of the Cardiff City U23’s in February 2020 by first team Manager Neil Harris.
Morrison was reunited with Cardiff manager Neil Harris - who he played under at Millwall - and hoped to follow his former boss into senior management, they called it the dream team to join up together at Cardiff City.)

Monday 9th November 2020

CARDIFF CITY FC.

David’s remit at Cardiff City FC will be to oversee our entire Academy coaching department, lead on coach and player development across all age groups from U9 to U23 and work with first team staff to ensure a smooth transition for players through the Academy and into the first team environment.

Whilst refining current playing and coaching styles, David will be entrusted with aligning all age groups within the Academy to create consistency in play and progression across the three phases of Academy development. His most recent post was as Southampton’s Head of Academy Player Development, having held similar key roles in youth development at Watford, Aston Villa and with the Football Association of Wales.

DAVID HUGHES:

Speaking David said: “I’m really excited and pleased to be here; this is a very exciting opportunity, because Cardiff City Football Club has an important place in my heart. I started my coaching journey here over 15 years ago, so to come back having learned from other organisations and talented individuals is fantastic.

“Development is more than just grass-based practice; education and holistic growth is essential for young players, as is understanding what it takes to be successful as an individual on and off the pitch. Establishing our identity and playing style as a club across age groups is also critical.

“We have very able coaches in our Academy programme and integrating player and coach development will be essential in ensuring that we are developing across all areas. It’s important to stress that there is a huge amount of highly talented individuals in this Academy and the staff here are aware of that fact.

“Fundamentally, my role is going to be about looking at coach and player development and aligning phases and pathways to ensure that we’re giving our exciting, local talent a route that ends with a senior debut. Success is gauged by seeing those young players running out on the pitch in that scenario, at ease in their new surroundings. Individual development and progression is central to the club’s long-term success.”

Head of Academy, James McCarthy, added: “This is a hugely exciting appointment for the Club, and I think David’s track record at his former clubs speaks for itself.

“His passion and enthusiasm for youth development and working with our young footballers is evident and I know how much they and our coaches will benefit from his experience and expertise.”

This is not Steve Morison territory is it? Who has Hughes taken over from or was the position vacant?

Had to check with Google. Apparently Morison only coaches the under 23s squad

Morrison was suppose to be the main coach for the U23's as Neil Harris brought him in, in February 2020 as Head coach of the U23's.

I dont see Morrison lasting now, a year of disastrous results.

But hear we go again, there will a so called another overhaul of the Academies up to 2nd team(U23's).

In 11 years we have had about 7 clear outs, watch now.

Former Wales striker Steve Morison is dreaming of becoming a first-team manager after being named the new head coach of Cardiff City's under-23 side.

11th February 2020

Morison, 36, retired from playing in October and started coaching with Northampton Town in League Two.

Now he has been reunited with Cardiff manager Neil Harris - who he played under at Millwall - and hopes to follow his former boss into senior management.

"Oh yeah, of course. That's the dream," Morison told BBC Radio Five Live.

"That's the journey I'm on, hopefully, and you have to take your steps and this is the next step in that.

"I need to wake up every morning with a purpose and something to achieve in life and I've got that now with the job at Cardiff and it's a great job with a great bunch of lads.

"We have competitive league fixtures and we're practising and working on things you want to do on a football pitch every day and you get to start learning your trade with men, with people who are aspiring to get into a first team.

"I think I can really, really help with that, so that's my plan."

Cardiff City boss Neil Harris says he is delighted with the appointment of Steve Morison as the Bluebirds' new under-23s chief.

The former Wales international was revealed yesterday as the man to head up the club's academy.

February 11th 2020

Harris himself has big plans for it and backed the club's ambitions for category one status. And he explained the thought process behind Morison's arrival, having worked with him at Millwall.

NEIL HARRIS:

He said of the appointment: "Really pleased. The due diligence to go into that appointment was huge.

The outstanding level of candidates, I’m really impressed with the calibre. It’s a wonderful opportunity, that under-23s role at the moment. To have Steve and Tom coming in is brilliant. Tom brings continuity, but also an understanding of the academy.

"Steve Morison brings a wealth of experience from the Football League, Premier League and international set-up with Wales. He is a young, hungry coach which shows we want a young, hungry squad. We need that continuity through the squad. He was my club captain at Millwall and is a leader. He has always wanted to coach and he knows what I want and he knows my thought process. I’ll only play the young players when they are ready."

“To have Steve head coach of the U23’s and Tom over the Accademy, I know I will see the best coming though the ranks of Cardiff City, a great team if coaches under me.”

Harris added that he has "insisted" on the youngsters training with the first team and be in and around the training ground so as to make the transition from academy to first-team fold easier.

Why are people always looking for the negative and shit stirring this is a very good appointment his role will be Overall Development Manager a vacancy that was mentioned last season not Manager of the Under 23 under 9's under 16 Overall Development Manager. As City fans i wonder sometimes what the agenda is from some people always looking for the bad in every decision the club makes never the good.

Probably because we have seen this umpteen times before? If you could reel off a list of players who have graduated from our academy over the past 10-15 years then I could understand your post more. Unfortunately any list would be a very short one especially in recent years.

The academy has not been fit for purpose for a long time. It shouldn't be that hard as love him or loath him Sam Hammam ran a brilliant academy before leaving in 2006.

That’s exactly why we are fed up and don’t see the positive side anymore as it’s change after change after change.

I am a very positive person and poster but I don’t see this going forward anymore

Whats he done in the last 15 years then, would be good to know what he's been up to?

The fact we haven't seen any success over God knows how many years then lets just chuck the towel in and let all the local talent head down west as been the case for way to long. If at first you dont succeed then try try again.
