WHAT IS THE CURRENT SITUATION WITH ROBERT GLATZEL AT CARDIFF CITY?By Chris Gallagher Wednesday 4th November 2020
Cardiff City got back to winning ways as they beat Barnsley 3-0 last night with Robert Glatzel handed a rare start by Neil Harris.
The striker was a significant signing when he joined for around £5.5m last year but it’s fair to say that his first season in England didn’t really go to plan as he managed just seven league goals.
Not much has changed now, with the German yet to get off the mark in seven appearances, although it should be said that many of them have been from the bench.
Kieffer Moore has been preferred to lead the line by Harris, although he did opt for two up top last night and it worked, with Glatzel seeming to benefit by playing alongside the target man.
That has offered fresh hope for the 26-year-old because it seems as though his future was going nowhere under the current regime.
Given his cost, it would have made sense to move Glatzel on in the January window if he was no longer needed as he would surely attract a buyer, particularly from Germany, if Harris could find a replacement.
However, there are plenty of games between now and then, with the display last night showing signs of promise in a front two.
The obvious issue would be the return of Lee Tomlin. He is a natural number ten and has undoubted quality, so that means Harris could continue with a 4-2-3-1, which leaves Glatzel on the bench.
Ultimately, he will have opportunities in the coming weeks and it’s down to the striker to take those chances. If he does, Glatzel can have a future at Cardiff and as an attacker he should be relishing the chance to play with the likes of Moore, Harry Wilson and Junior Hoilett.
