Mon Nov 02, 2020 6:17 am

Wonder what they are up to Dave was my favourite player of all time and Gary was such a great fella,
I know Dave went back to Coventry and was working for an electrical wholesaler.

We weren't very good at the time but ninian park but these guys were class. :bluebird:

The only player higher than Whitts in my Cardiff City hierarchy of greats is Dave Bennett.

The big time seemed so far away, but i thought we had this guy from there.

Yes, those two were great, and so was that season. Was really pleased for Dave to win the FA Cup in 87 with Coventry, and Gary was a Roker legend also..

Could do with him now..

Two great players for the Bluebirds and thoroughly nice guys

Was sad to see them go but they were better than us at that time and deserved their breaks

Dave became a modern Coventry hero for his FA Cup Final antics and Gary a super player for Sunderland

Respect to both and a place in the Cardiff City Hall of Fame...! :ayatollah: :bluescarf: :bluebird: :D

Dave in particular was far too skilful for the division we were in when he joined.
I loved the story that he’s talked about when he was lining up against his opposition fullback at the start of a game and the fullback offered to shake his hand and said ‘I’m really sorry ‘ adage asked why he was apologetic and the player replied that his one job for the match was to kick fcuck out of Dave Bennett and he was apologising for it beforehand. :laughing6:

Gary Bennett’s testimonial at Sunderland.. 21,000 turned up. Won’t see adulation like that again, the love has gone for money. Ruined it to a degree.

Agree; testimonials are a thing of the past unless there is a charitable angle and for those ultra-loyal players down the leagues, who may not have had the earning potential of the big guns in the top couple of divisions

Know what you're saying mate but I'd like to think that we'd get a bumper crowd if / when we get a testimonial for Peter Whittingham :bluescarf:

Dave was very much a hero at the City and rightly so, but I always believed Gary was a better player. More athletic, quicker, and could take a ball from defence to attack in a heart beat with the ball at his feet.

He was used an an emergency, final 10 minutes of a game, striker a few times with great success, but when he was asked to play as a striker from the start, it just didn't work for him.

oh what memories, players who played for the club, played for the shirt, played for the fans - not like some of these overpaid pansies we have now robbing us blind on silly money.

Yeah, think you’re right mate.. Whitts was special to this club, even more so considering.

Forgot Dave played in the 81 Final as well.. just read that if you flicked 10p at him in the pub, he’d try to trap it.
Player in a pub ha ha..

Dave Bennett was a dream to watch, seemed to have the ball on an elastic at times and Gary was one of the best all round defenders I've seen in a City shirt, no nonsense but could certainly play a bit too. He was an absolute rock for Sunderland too.

Gary Bennett works as a radio pundit covering Sunderland games. He can be seen on The Sunderland till I die series on Netflix. Loved the Bennett brothers down the City.

Seems unbelievable now that we signed a player in Dave Bennett, who a year earlier was playing in the Cup Final and leaving them for a struggling Division 2 team. Wouldn’t happen now.

Loved both Bennett brothers both top quality in their own positions. Jeff Hemmerman certainly profited from the skills and services of Dave Bennett on the right wing. It's funny how time erodes the memory, the reverse fixture Cardiff v Portsmouth in the 82/83 season not the clock game but the game at Ninian I always remember as being an important game and a big game in the context of the season. Yet we only had a crowd of 7,082. In fact for a promotion season the crowds were really poor with the odd exception.
I suppose when you reflect on the crowds then to now it shows how we have progressed as a club.
