Cardiff City boss Neil Harris ready to avenge QPR hammering and gives latest on Harry Wilson and Lee Tomlin

NEIL HARRIS:

Harry Wilson prognosis?

"Positive developments. No muscle injury, just a hip impingement, which has come from the big spike in minutes he played in that first week, continuously striking the ball with that left foot.

"Whether tomorrow comes too soon we will have to see on the training pitch today. If not I’m certainly hopeful of next week."

Would you want to change team anyway?

NEIL HARRIS:

"The injuries, ever-changing moments of Covid tests, nervousness around that. It’s always changing, things like that.

"That’s affecting team selections for me at the moment.

"You want continuity because you want the team to get in a rhythm, but you have to balance that off with using the players in the squad.

"It’s being dictated to by injuries and less than three days between games.

"Will I be able to pick the same team tomorrow? Probably not. Will they? Probably not.

"It’s challenging at the moment. I’d like to pick a settled team."

NEIL HARRIS:

Not good memories at QPR?

"No! We can laugh about it now. Some very valuable lessons learned for me that day as a manager.

"It was very hard hitting, some defining moments in the changing room that day, strong words, and a lot changed afterwards over a period of time.

"You can’t make things happen overnight and you can’t change that immediately, but I have changed it over time.

"I certainly hope for a different outcome."

NEIL HARRIS:

Unbeaten in five - lots of draws, how do you win?

"Clean sheets and score more goals!

"It was put to me the other day, searching, stuttering start. That’s what we are doing at the moment.

"We are not winning enough to make sure we are affecting those top few positions.

"Consistency in team selection would be nice but with the amount of games we have got we can’t use the same team continuously.

"But it’s about taking our chances and having our best players on the pitch."

NEIL HARRIS:

Held the lead when you’ve gone in front?

"Yeah, the biggest thing has been conceding that first goal.

"Conceding that first goal is something we have talked about as a group. Ultimately you just go through spells as teams, you might have clean sheet after clean sheet and then you might concede the first goal."

NEIL HARRIS:

Improving now though?

"Yeah. I look at the Sheffield Wednesday game and we got them at the completely wrong time and they got us at the right time.

"Mentally we weren’t there in the first game of the season.

"Consistent over 90 minutes? No. But has that come from the consistency in team selection?

"I think what we are seeing, the last five games, I thought Bournemouth were good to be honest, but we have been the better team.

"We will get better and I am glass half full.

"I wouldn’t say I’m happy at the moment, because I want to win games. But I’m OK and I know we will see improvement."

NEIL HARRIS:

Murphy was stripped and ready but then sat down after the goal was scored, is he fit?

"Yeah, he played 60 minutes against Boro last week and I was pleased with him.

"Sometimes as a manager, things happen for a reason, Murph was about to come on, we scored a goal and I decided against it, I fancied the team we had on the pitch to go out and score another goal.

"You go on that gut feeling, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. We have a fan base of 30,000 people who would have made a sub or picked a different team, but I have to make those decisions to what I feel is right.

"Murph is training every day and he is certainly fitter than he was a couple of weeks ago.

"Sometimes as a manager you want to see players every day at the top of their game, busting a gut and showing you they should be in the team. That’s my message to the players on the fringes.

"Make sure you show me every day you have to be in my team."

NEIL HARRIS:

Will Osei-Tutu's injury cause you to dip into free agent market?

"Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

"Where did the budget allow us to strengthen the team? We went at the top end of the pitch. Will we go for free agents? I wouldn’t have thought so.

"I have had superb backing in the last transfer window. Sometimes you just have to get on with it.

"If someone was available who I felt would make us better then that’s a discussion for me to have with the board.

"It’s worth remembering with the free agents market that players might be available and on paper they look OK. But there is not a player available who will be fit enough to play in the next three weeks.

"So, if we got anyone in now they wouldn’t be available until the end of November. So it’s always that balance with free transfers."

NEIL HARRIS:

Lee Tomlin update?

"Good week for Lee! He’s been on the training pitch and we are hoping he can travel with us to QPR.

"We miss him in the group, his liveliness and chirpiness. Important for us, personality-wise.

"When we talk about the tight games, the draws, those little moments in games, those fine margins, players of Lee’s ability, he changes those fine margins.

"We saw that in the Christmas period last year, when he was at his best. So having him back in the group, hopefully tomorrow and moving forward, will be a big plus for us."

NEIL HARRIS:

What’s his morale like?

"He’s desperate to be playing!

"Like all players, it’s about when you are playing and involved in training every day, you are buzzing and lively.

"Then when you have a setback it is a frustration for you. It’s the same for all players, in that treatment room is not a good place to be.

"You look at the window at the players and you’re inside with the physio, it’s not a good period.

"Lee needs to be on the grass to enjoy his life, really, that’s not just got for him and also for the squad as well.

"Lee is at an age, the other side of 30 now, your days go quicker when you get to that stage, time goes quicker. He wants to be involved in every training session and every game."

Benkovic?

"Filip played 79 minutes on Tuesday. I was able to watch the first hour of it and was really really pleased.

"It wasn’t a taxing game, it was a comfortable performance from the young lads.

"But it’s really important and balancing off what was important for him, sitting on the bench or get some much-needed minutes? We look back now and that’s a really good decision.

"He’s not going to be completely up to speed, but it’s certainly helped him close a gap."

Re: NEIL HARRIS:

You, Wilson, Osei-Tutu injuries, can’t pick the team he wants to?

JOE BENNETT:

"Difficult at times! Harry has been an unbelievable addition to the squad, he could easily be playing in the Premier League.

"To get him into the club is a real asset.

"Him and Kieffer linking up, then you got Tommo coming back from injury, he has still got a massive part to play.

"If we can get them two fit, we will be flying."

NEIL HARRIS:

Has there been some over-caution?

"I think this is where it becomes… not a tactical one but also the element of which players are fit.

"There have been times where I’ve wanted to play a different team, perhaps more attack-minded, but things behind the scenes where players haven’t been at full tilt. I have had to pick a team then change it because of illness. There has been a lot of change in selection recently.

"The other night, 4-3-3, people will say it took 58, 59 minutes to put Bobby [Glatzel] on. Could I have started Bobby from the start? It wasn’t possible for various reasons to play a 4-4-2.

"You have to think about affecting the game at the end, game changers to affect the game at the end.

"Then you look at the success we have had on the road, I am a big one for stats and the first three games were won by game changers.

"It won’t always be a 4-3-3, it’ll be a 4-2-3-1 sometimes, a 4-4-2, but we looked at the opponent diligently and, more than anything, who was available."

INJURY UPDATE:

Friday 30th October 2020 :bluebird:

NEIL HARRIS:

"Harry Wilson, right at the end of training [Tuesday], just a hip flexor, his left groin area, tightened up," Harris said.

"We are hopeful that there is no long term in it, we are hoping it's a really short turnaround. I'm not sure if we'll see him on the weekend, we will have to see when we are back in tomorrow and Friday.

"To lose him, he is a big blow because he started like a house on fire with us. So he's not going to be long.

Harris is similiarly hopeful on the fitness of Tomlin, whose creativity has been missing since he was sent off against Blackburn and who has barely featured this season.

After a somewhat underwhelming attacking performance against the Rams, Harris will be hoping to have the two players back sooner rather than later.

"Lee Tomlin is very close as well, which will give us another maverick in the side, great use of the ball, a real goal threat and a clever player for us at this level.

"It will certainly add quality for us having those two players back in the group."

However, the news on Osei-Tutu isn't quite so positive.

The full-back has seemingly aggravated a hamstring problem first picked up in the win over Preston North End, and could well be out until the trip to Millwall next month.

"Jordi's not a great one, hamstring, he is going to be out until at least the international break, unfortunately," Harris said.

"It's just really unlucky. We have lost two full-backs in the space of a week.

"Jordi is going to be a loss for us because he was just showing what a good player he is going to be.

"But getting Harry Wilson and Lee Tomlin back into the group will give us a real attacking impetus to our play and hopefully Jordi won't be long."

Lee Tomlin is set to travel to QPR tomorrow. Neil Harris suggested he could be key to changing draws into wins, which we all know he's more than capable of. The limelight is off him a little this term, but he's definitely no less important :bluebird:
