CHARLTON RE-SIGN MATTHEWS

Charlton Athletic have re-signed Adam Matthews on a one-year deal.

The Wales international joined Charlton last summer and made 29 appearances for the club.

Manager Lee Bowyer told the club's official website: “He's another strong addition to the squad, obviously we know Adam inside out. He's a good player so it definitely makes us stronger. We always try to put a squad together so you have two players competing for each position, so we have good cover, good backup and good competition for places and adding Adam has done that."

Matthews, who trained with the club this summer, added: “It's very exciting, obviously it has been a bit strange this year, not just for me but for football in general and I'm very excited to be back at a place I know. I have a good relationship with the manager, with the boys and the fans seemed to like me while I was here, so it is good to eventually get it done and to get back playing."

Charlton Athletic to sign former Cardiff City, Celtic, Sunderland and Bristol City defender Adam Matthews

Matthews appears set to link up with fellow Wales internationals Chris Gunter, Jonny Williams and Dylan Levitt under Lee Bowyer.

The 14-cap Wales international spent the duration of the 2019/20 campaign at The Valley but is currently a free agent after his one-year deal with the Addicks expired in the summer.

But London News Online report that Matthews is poised to sign a fresh one-year contract with the League One outfit.

The 28-year-old started his career with Cardiff City but left the Welsh capital to join Celtic in 2011.

After four years with the Scottish giants, Matthews moved on to pastures new having won four league titles, a Scottish Cup and a Scottish League Cup in Glasgow.

He signed for Sunderland in 2015 but was released by the club last year having also had a loan spell at Bristol City during the 2016/17 campaign.

But he now appears set to link up with fellow Wales internationals Chris Gunter, Jonny Williams and Dylan Levitt under Lee Bowyer.

Matthews made a total of 29 appearances in the Championship for Charlton last season.

The Swansea-born defender last featured for Wales in their 1-0 China Cup final defeat to Uruguay in March 2018.

The Wales international is expected to pen a contract with the Addicks until the end of the season.

Matthews, who is 28 years old, trained with the London side during pre-season but they were unable to sign him again. However, that has changed now and they are poised to boost their defensive options by handing him another deal.

We have missed out with him and Gunter, not just because they are Welsh.

Charlton fans are delighted they have signed Matthews. Was superb last year apparently. Gunter would be good as a back up and he’s needed now for sure.
