A word on the excellent debutant

By Glen Williams

Thursday 22nd October 2020

Of course, there was a proud moment for the Joel Bagan family on Wednesday night when 19-year-old Joel made his Championship debut.

We all know just how highly he is thought of within the Bluebirds academy and we saw just why that was the case.

He will scarcely come up against a better attacking outfit than Bournemouth this season - in fact, Neil Harris believes any team who finishes above them will get promoted - and more than held his own.

There were shaky moments as he bedded into the rhythm of the game, and that was to be expected, but as the game wore on he really made an impact at both ends of the pitch.

He made a crucial block on a Jack Stacey shot just after half-time and throw himself about in the Cardiff box when play got scrappy from set pieces.

In attack he looked silky and smooth on the ball, a typically-stylish left-footer. He joined the attacks when he was afforded the chance and gained confidence with those forward runs as City hit their straps late on.

And, as you can imagine, he was delighted.

"I'm very happy to have made my league debut," Bagain said after the match.

Especially against a good team like Bournemouth.

"I'm happy with the result and with my own performance as well.

He added: "I think we could have won the game in the end. We're happy to take a point though and move on to another big game on Saturday.

"It was good to get out there and I want to stay involved with the first team. We have a few more days of training before getting straight back into it on Saturday, but I don't mind that!"

Well done young man. You and your family can be very proud of your performance last night.

Let's hope that's the first of many appearances in a City shirt.

Hopefully there'll be a few more following in his footsteps
