Alex Smithies saves the day (again!)

It would be remiss to praise the top end of the pitch without citing a world-class save at the other end.

Alex Smithies seems to have a permanent place in these post-match analysis pieces, but every single week he churns out top performances. He is such a huge asset to the team and all City fans certainly appreciate the consistent displays he continues to put in for the Bluebirds.

But on Wednesday night, he might well have produced his best-ever save in a Bluebirds shirt, pulling it out of the bag like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat.

Bournemouth looked certain to score their second of the evening with a strikingly similar move to how they netted the first. Jack Stacey whipped in a low ball across the box and Dominic Solanke looked certain to poke home to double the lead.

But a sprawling Smithies, who seemingly had no chance of keeping it out, managed to tip the ball, from point-blank range, on to the crossbar to keep the lead at 1-0.

Replays of the save have been put on social media and it looks a terrific save - but I can assure you it looked even better in real time at Cardiff City Stadium, so much quicker and more impressive.

"A great, great save," Harris said.

"That's why I'm so pleased with a point, because they had great chances.

"We can talk about a really good goal we scored, the chances we created, but you need your goalkeeper against good sides as well and Alex showed himself to be one of the top goalkeepers in the division."

Cardiff are so fortunate to have him between the sticks and he could earn just as many points for City as this newly-formed and vaunted front line do this season.
