:bluebird: “ NEIL HARRIS TODAY UPDATES CARDIFF CITY FANS “ :bluebird:

Tuesday 20th October 2020

NEIL HARRIS:

Wilson - ready to start?

"It wasn't training time at the weekend. It was purely international clearance with the three new lads. And the three games in six days. Some players will be able to do it. Some won’t.

"We have to be mindful of that. Harry came through the 60 minutes really well and he’ll be looking to get back out in the next couple of games."

No home advantage anymore?

"I have to remind myself of that, but so do the fans. Home advantage has gone without the fanbase there. It just becomes a level playing field with 22 footballers running around on it. Away record in the last 12 months speaks for itself. It’s the best in the country.

"But that doesn't change the fact you want to win home games. Just because you’re at home. You feel with football that’s the way it should be.

"Come the end of the season, if we're in the top six and we've won more points away than at home, no one will bat an eyelid. However, we want to get back to winning ways at home and that starts with the next four days and the 2 home games we’ve got."

Neil Harris has Greg Cunningham will be unavailable for "a few weeks" due to injury.

Joe Bennett and Jordi Osei-Tutu will undergo late fitness tests for Wednesday's game against AFC Bournemouth.

Harris says he has "no concerns" if 19-year-old Joel Bagan has to be called upon, because he's "ready to play".

NEIL HARRIS:

No team running away with it this year in race for promotion...

"I don't know. It's easy to say some good teams have come out of the PL, and got promoted last year. But you never know with the Champ. Anything can happen. Liecester won the PL a few years ago. No one saw that happening. Anything can happen. Do I think more places are up for grabs than normal? Possibly. But then in October, November, no one gave us a cat in hell’s chance of coming fifth.

"I think there's some big teams that have come out the PL ie Watford, Norwich Bournemouth. You look at the clubs that missed out last year like ourselves. Then you look at other big clubs at the level, Forest and Derby spring to mind straight.

"It’s a great league and I don't buy that there's less quality in it. It’s always the same every year."

On Bournemouth

"We know Bournemouth's ability, you've just got to look at their squad on paper. The quality of player they’ve got throughout the team.

"They’ve had a good start to the season. We know the level of test in front of us, but that’s why we play the game.

"We want to test ourselves against the best sides in the division and you want to challenge yourselves as a group against the best teams."

More on the Cherries

"We've got a lot to prove in the game. We've got momentum from the weekend, where we had a fine performance, following up an excellent point at Blackburn a couple of weeks before.

"So we’ve had had a really good spell and a really good transfer window. Our point to prove is that we need to get the ball rolling at the Cardiff City Stadium as I think quite a lot of teams do in the UK at the moment, with the amount of away wins.

"But we’re one in particular, where we’re conscious of the fact that we need to get off the mark at home.

NEIL HARRIS:

Morrison-Nelson partnership a big highlight at the moment

"I don't think they've put a foot wrong in the first five games of the season. I know we conceded four goals. Two are where they’ve given the ball away cheaply in their own half and two are from set plays, which is unlike us. They'll feel responsibility for goals as will the goalkeeper, but their form and that of the team defensively has been very good.

"The work ethic that I demand in the group. Shape and discipline is vital. If you want to be successful, you have to have that work ethic. Harry Wilson, Kieffer Moore, Sheyi Ojo, the players you’ve seen a lot of at the start of the season - the work-rate's there, the game understanding's there. That's what separates top players from other players."

NEIL HARRIS:

Bacuna's versatility a big plus

"Leo this season has played midfielder, number 10 right back and left back already.

"Having that versatility really key to the team. Harry Wilson covers those positions all behind the front and I’m more comfortable with full-backs being able to play right or left side. I have no issue with that. We’ll see Adam Smith doing it for Bournemouth at left wingback.”

Could Wilson offer any inside tips on Bournemouth?

"I would say Harry is a very good young professional and good young man. Not sure how much he’s going to have picked up.

"Knowledge is key, as we know. We know what to expect from Bournemouth.

"They press high, good wing backs and good footballers."

NEIL HARRIS:

A great shame, two big signings can’t show themselves off to fans inside grounds?

"I’m mindful of what is expected of me here and that won’t ever change, that’s what Cardiff fans want to see.

"Our own players and young players, too. I know for a fact that they want to see young Welsh players too.

"Bringing Kieffer in, Harry, bringing young players in. Mark Harris, Joel Bagan, George Ratcliffe.

"Having young players like Sheyi, Jordi, Benko… it’s exciting.

"You have to be patient, but it is exciting times as well.

"It’ll be bumpy along the way at times but we will improve as times go by."

NEIL HARRIS:

Team news

"Greg Cunningham is going to be out for a few weeks. It’s a hamstring strain. I really feel for him. He's been out for so long and has been so desperate to get his Cardiff City career going and he’s just looked so fit and reliable, finding his feet again after such a long time out. It's just a tweak of the hamstring. That’s a shame.

"Jordi and Benno have come off late in games, so we'll have to see how they go before tomorrow night's game, whether they can make it. I have no concerns over Bacuna filling in. A lot more would have been made of his performance [on Sunday] if he’d been a bigger name at a bigger club. His versatility is really vital to us."

Win did you a bit of good on the weekend?

"It’s tough being a manager. The last transfer window was the toughest I encountered. I really leant on the board’s experience, Mehmet and Ken, football-wise and their business knowledge as well.

"We got players out before we got the right players in.

"Getting business done was really key and the performance and the win was vital.

"I’m under no illusion how tough the next four days will be though. Cardiff as a county and a town we have to make sure we put smiles on the faces of people."

NEIL HARRIS:

With what’s going on, it’s more incumbent for clubs to put smiles on fans’ faces - do you feel added responsibility?

"I think the message was clear. We felt the responsibility when we came back at the end of June. You felt it then for sure. It’s slightly different now as it’s a circuit-breaker whatever you want to call it, to slow it down. But responsibility always falls on us as a football club in Cardiff. It always falls on our profession to lead the industry in the right manner. We are role models for society and so responsibility is always there. It never changes."

CARDIFF CITY’S CEO KEN CHOO:

Harry Wilson says that once Cardiff made their interest known, he wanted to move to the Welsh capital, he had no interest in speaking to any other clubs.

And Cardiff chief executive Ken Choo told TalkSPORT: "It's great to secure the services of Harry. He's a gem."

Choo insisted "reports of a £1.2million loan deal are 'not correct, to be honest with you, they are not even close, We pay Liverpool if we are promoted and are only paying a proportion of Harry's wages."

Cardiff have been inventive in the way they have done the deal with Liverpool to ensure it is in effect self-funding. They will pay a sum to the Premier League champions if Wilson helps them to promotion and Premier League riches next season, while Cardiff are only responsible for a proportion of Wilson's wages.

But the player himself helped get the deal over the line, Cardiff officials describing Wilson as a 'down to earth character, likeable and with terrific footballing talent.'

Wilson's involvement as a substitute saw the Bluebirds get off to a post-transfer window flier in the 1-0 win at Preston and he is expected to start Wednesday night's clash with Bournemouth.

Choo said the success of Cardiff's transfer window, and the renewed optimism it has brought Bluebirds' fans, was down to the backing of Malaysian boss Vincent Tan.

"It's great to have an owner like Vincent who is extremely supportive and has been for so many years," said Choo.

"His loyalty to Cardiff City is still the same. in the days going into the window, during it and towards the end, Vincent was on call 24/7 for us to speak to him about targets.

"He was very supportive and it enabled us to make decisions quickly."

Harry Wilson - How grateful were you to get him?

NEIL HARRIS:

"We believe he's a good player. We think his record speaks volumes to back that comment up. He wants to be at Cardiff, be in the capital of Wales. He's a proud Welshman. He wants to represent his nation next summer at the Euros and to do that, if you’re not going to play for the best team in the world, you have to get out and play some football.

"We're delighted to have him. He's fit in great with the lads. He’s a great boy, who goes about his business well. As has Sheyi Ojo, who’s come from Liverpool as well.

"He [Harry] adds a different dimension to our game. Now I feel like we have real versatility with our front players. We have a couple of players with real abilities to change a game in a moment."

Re: BREAKING NEIL HARRIS:

Harry a 'level-headed' player

NEIL HARRIS:

"He's a very level-headed guy. He’s fitted straight in. It helps that he knows Kieffer and Will Vaulks. They’re quite pally when they’re away with Wales.

"And he obviously knows Sheyi from coming through the age groups at Liverpool. So settling in straight away always helps with away games when you’re mixing with the group on a long journey and then in the hotel in the evening and the morning, eating together, it really helps new lads settle in. Harry, Dillon and Benkovic have really settled in well the last couple of days."

Josh Murphy - working his way up to speed?

NEIL HARRIS:

"I think Josh came back from the close season great. He did very well in the preseason games. In my opinion he was excellent. Then he had a hamstring issue, then last week again he had a few days off sick. Nothing Covid related but it was just general sickness and diarrhea. So unfortunately his start to the season has been a bit up and down. We know the quality he possesses. I’ve had a couple of really good chats with Murph. We all know his ability. It goes back to what I was saying about the discipline and the mentality in the group to do both sides of the game."

Neil Harris on Isaac Vassell:

“At one stage, we were looking to loan him out. He got back on the training pitch for a couple of weeks, then had a new injury a foot problem.”

“We’re hoping he’ll be training this week, but he won’t be back anytime soon. There’ll be a 4-6 week period to build him up.’

“If all goes well with Isaac we could be looking bay January to start a first team game.”
