Premier League Clubs reject proposals

The Daily Times

Wednesday 14th October 2020

The Premier League clubs have kicked Project Big Picture into the long grass and agreed instead to hold an urgent strategy review involving all 20 members, as well as making a new bail-out offer to the EFL.

An emergency meeting of the 20 clubs called after last weekend’s announcement of the Project’s aims to revolutionise English football — put forward by Liverpool and Manchester United and backed by the EFL chairman Rick Parry — has effectively killed off the plan at birth.

There was also an agreement to put together a rescue package for the EFL, with the offer including an option for the bail-out funding only to go to the League One and League Two clubs. That, however, could still be vetoed by the Championship clubs.

It had been expected that there would be some fiery exchanges aimed at the Liverpool and Manchester United representatives but according to one club executive in the meeting it was “civilised”.

Was a massive power grab by the bigger clubs. They had the efl over a barrel as clubs are desperate. If the prem actually cared that much they would help out the efl with no strings attached and without all the demands for changes. There was clearly some long term agenda for the big clubs if all voting power was to be shifted to them.

It's good news but no doubt they'll already have begun new talks to put an amended deal on the table. Unfortunately I imagine there's going to be more to this story in the coming weeks.

If I was being cynical I would suggest they always knew the plan would fall through and the new strategy will be to push through a very similar proposal just without the 9 clubs/6 voters given extra power. Cutting the PL to 18 and removing the Charity Shield just frees up more time for a mini Premier League superstar tournament in China or America. Personally 4 extra PL fixtures and an extra domestic cup is much more appealing to me.

The other part of the proposal I could see them trying to push again is clubs being able to sell the TV rights for a set number of their matches, I believe the proposal was for 8 matches. For the Big 6, these matches will sell for much more than games involving Brighton, Burnley, Palace, etc. Taking these matches out also means the overall TV deal for the entire premier league is devalued as Sky, BT, Amazon, etc would lose a total of 160 games available to be televised. It looks very much like a workaround to get the TV money redistributed unfairly disproportionately to themselves.

I didn't realise the extent of damage this could do originally but it would be worrying if it gets put back on the table.

Odd all 20 clubs rejected plan? Sounds like postering for another plan at later date...
