Report: West Brom’s Charlie Austin wanted by Cardiff on loan

ByJordan Harris

October 112, 2020

West Bromwich Albion striker Charlie Austin is on Cardiff City’s radar, with The Telegraph reporting that the Bluebirds are interested in a season-long loan.

The 31-year-old is yet to feature for the Baggies since they were promoted to the Premier League. He did however, play an important role in helping Slaven Bilic’s men get to the top flight.

Charlie Austin is currently on £70,000 a week, the Bluebirds have offered to pay a third of that wage.
Austin scored 10 goals in 34 Championship appearances following his switch from Southampton. He only made 18 starts for the club, instead often proving to be a super-sub.

Nevertheless, it appears that he could be on the move before the window fully closes. The Telegraph reports that Bilic is prepared to let Austin leave the Hawthorns as he looks to fund a move for a new striker.

The report adds that Cardiff are keen to take Austin on loan. It is noted that Neil Harris’s side are also looking at Barnsley’s Cauley Woodrow.

It will be interesting to see if West Brom have any interest in loaning Austin out. As noted by Sky Sports, his contract with the club expires at the end of the season. So they would surely prefer to let him go permanently.

Having said that, Spotrac shows that Austin earns £70,000-a-week. That apparently places him as one of the club’s highest earners.

So if Bilic does not have him in his plans, he will surely be open to any offers that come in as he looks to bolster his own transfer kitty ahead of the final days of the window.

More football wage insanity that we should hopefully see the end of.

He is now 31 so his £70k a week has been through his "prime" years.

In three seasons at Southampton he scored 16 goals in 71 appearances granted in a struggling side at bottom end of PL.

Playing in a quality West Brom side last year he managed 10 goals in 34 games, most off the bench, which is a record barely better than Glatzel or Pato.

He has a year left on his WBA contract and the question here really is what would he now command by way of a wage if he was out of contract?

oh if players contributions were as simplistic as that eh...

Granted. Think point I'm making is he had a new three year contract two years ago. WBA in PL then and he was 28/29. His stock value, even before Covid, has inevitably taken a hit. If he had been out of contact now he would not be getting anywhere near £70k. He has no pace and is he going to produce more for us than Glatzel or Pato? I very much doubt it. We don't seem to have midfield players with an eye for regular goals and will Austin help get goals for Hoilett, Murphy, Ralls and co? I can't see it.

Id offer him 20000 a week for a seaon loan or a 2 year deal worth 20,000 pw dependent on games played etc.

So he didn't go anywhere. WBA can retain the dubious pleasure of £70k a week.

he probably would its been his game for his entire career.. i think its too easy to get caught up in this goals ratio where as all around contribution and winning are s far more important... ive seen us promoted to the prem twice with our top scorers getting 8 and 10 goals... and also finish in the bottom 3 of the bottom division with a player scoring 21....
