Exclusive: Sheffield Wednesday & QPR set sights on signing Cardiff City star

Sheffield Wednesday and Queens Park Rangers are plotting moves to sign Cardiff City defender Aden Flint before Friday’s transfer deadline, Football Insider understands.

The 31-year-old has fallen down the pecking order with the Bluebirds and is not in manager Neil Harris’ plans moving forward.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that both Wednesday and QPR are looking to take advantage of Flint’s situation and sign the 6ft 5in [Transfermarkt] centre-back before the domestic window shuts on 16 October.

Flint joined Cardiff from Middlesbrough last summer for a fee reportedly worth a potential £6million and went straight into the starting XI under Harris. D

However, despite making 26 consecutive league starts from the opening day of the season, the Nottingham-born defender dropped to the bench in January and was left as an unused substitute for the rest of the Bluebirds’ Championship games.

He has been left out of the matchday squad for Cardiff’s opening four league games this season and was only on the bench for the 3-0 League Cup defeat to Northampton Town.

With Championship clubs able to sign players from the Premier League and across the EFL until Friday, both Sheffield Wednesday and QPR are keen on offering Flint an escape route from the Cardiff City Stadium.

Wednesday boss Garry Monk is looking to add to his squad after an indifferent start the season, with the Owls currently on -7 points after a 12-point deduction before the new campaign kicked off.

QPR have also picked up five points from their opening four games but have kept just one clean sheet so far.

Read on Twitter yesterday that Coventry were looking at Greg Cunningham.

Would it be just like our club to let Morrison, Flynt and Cunningham go this week.

Sounds like more bullshit based on nothing to me.

Imagine we'll take a massive loss if there is a transfer fee involved, unless its a loan? Either way its a Good move for both parties seeing as hes not in Harris plans and hes probably on a decent wage. If he does leave, we'd probably have to bring a cb in as we'd only have Bamba as cover. Not sure about cunningham at cb.

QPR and Sheffield Wednesday ‘plotting’ moves for Cardiff City defender

Sunday 11th October 2020

QPR and Sheffield Wednesday are ‘plotting’ moves for Cardiff City defender Aden Flint, according to a report by Football Insider.

The centre-back has fallen out-of-favour with the Bluebirds and could leave before the end of the transfer window.

Flint, who is 31 years old, only signed for the Welsh side last summer from Middlesbrough and has since made 30 appearances for them, chipping in with five goals.

He still has two years left on his deal at the Cardiff City Stadium but has caught the eye of fellow Championship sides QPR and Sheffield Wednesday.

Flint is a vastly experienced defender in the Football League and has racked up 397 appearances so far in his career.

The 6ft 5inc man started out in non-league at Alfreton Town before Swindon Town swooped to sign him in 2011. He then spent two years at the County Ground prior to his move to Bristol City.

Flint became an instant with the Robins and went onto spend five seasons there, scoring an impressive 38 goals in 246 games from centre-back.

Middlesbrough paid £7 million (as per Transfermarkt) to land him in 2018 after their relegation from the Premier League but sold him to Cardiff after just one season.

Flint is now being linked with another move, with QPR and Sheffield Wednesday eyeing a potential swoop for him before next Friday’s transfer deadline.

Whether we take a hit on his ridiculous transfer fee now or in the future doesn't really matter as its a loss either way. Doubt there is any truth in rumour but if there is and we can save wages of someone no where near good enough for top half of championship let alone top six then let him go.

He’s played nearly 300 games and scored a lot of goals in Championship so he’s proven at this level, plays very similar to Morrison so an ideal backup unless we get most of our money back!
