" Premier League make fixtures available on pay-per-view "

Fri Oct 09, 2020 2:57 pm

BBC

Premier League games not selected for broadcast in October will be available to fans on a pay-per-view basis.

The five fixtures per round not already picked to be shown live, will be available on BT Sport Box Office or Sky Sports Box Office, priced at £14.95.

Clubs have agreed this "interim solution" to allow fans to continue watching their team live.

The Premier League said it and its clubs "remain committed to the safe return of fans as soon as possible".

Football has been played behind closed doors since the coronavirus lockdown.

Former Manchester United and England right-back Gary Neville, now a television pundit, said on social media it was a "really bad move" by the Premier League.

Alex Hurst, the chair of Newcastle United's Supporters Trust said: "The idea that Premier League clubs NEED to implement PPV because of economic needs would carry more weight if they hadn't just spent £1bn on players, furloughed staff, received government loans, weren't charging fans for games they aren't going to and hadn't just made thousands of staff redundant."

The Premier League and UK government had hoped to bring fans back into stadiums from 1 October but those plans were scrapped following an increase in coronavirus cases.

BBC sports editor Dan Roan:

Ever since last season resumed, all Premier League matches have been available to watch live via the top-flight's broadcast partners. This was partly to help the government encourage fans to stay at home while games stayed behind closed doors, rather than congregating outside grounds or in pubs.

But having had their hopes of a partial return of fans inside grounds from 1 October dashed, despite the success of pilot events, the clubs have had enough of generating nothing from these matches.

Their annoyance at being told turnstiles must remain shut when pressure is also building on them to come up with a bail-out for the EFL, is likely to have hardened their stance.

But after clubs spent more than £1bn in the summer transfer window, and at a time when many supporters will be struggling financially, there will be anger about having to pay £15 for matches fans had grown used to watching for no extra cost, on top of their subscriptions for Sky and BT. Those who have also bought season tickets will be particularly infuriated.

I understand the Premier League's move has raised eyebrows within government, and clubs will now come under renewed pressure to refund season ticket holders, and perhaps reduce the pay-per-view cost going forward.

isnt this much the same as has been happening with ourselves from the re start ? only its a fiver more for prem games

if you have Sky and they are screening the game its part of the package... and if they are not screening the game its a tenner, whether its out of your ST money or paid for individually..

Worst Decision They Could Make.
They Could Easily Have It On A Red Button.

Or they could ask players to take a small pay cut, probably 5% , keep all staffs jobs and screen free games to season ticket holders as a thank you for years of dedication

Just thinking outside of the box I'm sure people will stand up for the poor footballers who shouldn't have to do it when everyone else is suffering

having read the full article it seems Sky/BT will not profit from this as the money will go to the clubs..

so how come they take a tenner off our club out of our ST money for every game... surely championship clubs are more in need than premier league clubs. ?

Have no interest in the premier league anymore your correct , mixing politics and sport also with blm propaganda made the decision really easier to never watch again.
woke politics has poisoned everything it touches .

I'll be getting rid of sky ,I kept paying full price for sky sports when no games were being played to help people keep there jobs, not even a thanks when plenty cancelled there sports ,but that's not the main reason ,there still sponsoring BLM , greedy selfish players ,the list goes on , just my view .

I love football but don't like what its become. Souless, and out of touch with working class roots, we are treated as cash cows.

Not just football ind, but the gap between haves and have nots is out of control. What is society's
breaking point.

Who stands up for the little man? F..k the big corps and big business and their cold attitudes towards us in these difficult times.

Fu.... pay per view
Fu..sky/BT
Fu.... Ifollow city tv

Im guessing Bayern pay their players handsomely and yet their season ticket is on par with ours and 3 times cheaper than Man Utd Compare that to prem prices.

And yes, players are mugging us off cause of the wages they earn which are impacting clubs finances now.

What do clubs, big businesses and gov normally do to claw back shortfalls??

Answers on a postcard with the winners getting free cup tickets or free coffee voucher.

Its all about oppions buddy. If you think players on 5000 to 250,000 a week all over the football pyramid is not impacting ticket prices then I guess I am lost and dreaming.

Clubs should cut their cloth accordingly and not keep coming to fans with their empty bowl.

I just felt that Bayern statement was crumb of compassion and grateful ness to their fan base. Perhaps Im wrong in thinking that.

Dont see the problem, gives the options for fans to see games that were not due to be shown on Sky or BT

its the clubs offering these wages.... and we are still signing or interested in signing players... now i dont know if you work for anyone...but if you did and he asked you and 12 others to take a reduction in wages because he was struggling..you could well say yes... if he then employed a chauffer on more money than you lot youd look fools...... so how then does this cant afford to pay you but buying players thing work ?

exactly, its either pay and watch or dont watch.. same as our games except its a fiver more... it doesnt effect the sky package..
i do see issue with where the money goes though....which SHOULD be the big issue here for championship fans...
the 15 quids will go to those premier lge clubs shown on PPV.. wheras our tenners go to Sky ?
