Warnock's Sala tears

By Dominic Booth

Wednesday 7th October 2020

The Emiliano Sala tragedy in January 2019 rocked the football world and Cardiff City in particular, with players, coaches and fans devastated by the news of the new striker's plane crash. Bamba reveals the emotional turmoil at the club after the tragedy.

Bamba, along with [player liaison officer] Callum Davies, had been involved in some of the negotiations with Sala as an interpreter, being a native French speaker. He reveals the immediate impressions Sala made on that Friday in Cardiff and how excited the squad were about their new acquisition.

SOL BAMBA:

“It made it worse that he'd actually met a few of the lads”, says Bamba.

“Everyone was looking forward to seeing him coming back and helping us stay in the Premier League.

"It affected every single one of us, the gaffer in particular. He said to me he shouldn't have let him go, he thought he should have asked Emiliano to stay in the UK. I was doing the translation and he asked me to say to Emiliano to come and watch the game against Newcastle and from there go and fly home to get his stuff.

"There was nothing anyone could have done. I remember being with Neil in his office in floods of tears thinking about it.”
