Cardiff City, Middlesbrough and Queens Park Rangers among clubs to be linked with former Leeds United midfielder

Cardiff City are among several Championship clubs to be linked with Barnsley's Alex Mowatt - but are yet to make any sort of concrete approach for the midfielder.

Football League World claims the Bluebirds, as well as Middlesbrough and Queens Park Rangers, are all keeping tabs on the Reds captain, who has one year left on his current deal at Oakwell.

Sources close to the player have confirmed to WalesOnline that a transfer is possible before the October 16 deadline, but have played down the possibility of a move to the Welsh capital, and have cast doubt on the level of interest from the Bluebirds.

Indeed, it appears there is no concrete approach from anyone at this stage and, as things stand, the player is likely to stay in South Yorkshire beyond the close of the window.

Questions over the 25-year old's future have grown in recent weeks, with talks over a new deal seemingly hitting an impasse.

An option to extend the former Leeds United star's contract until the summer of 2021 was activated back in May, but discussions over a further extension have so far been unable to find a breakthrough.

Barnsley chief executive Dane Murphy has insisted that the player's focus remains with the club, but admits they are "far apart" in terms of reaching an agreement.

Speaking to The Yorkshire Post, Murphy said: "We have been speaking to Alex and his representatives. We are still somewhat far apart in negotiations.

"But Alex is such a good person and his agent is a very good person that it will never get contentious and something that will become a headline.

"We are working towards something. At the end of the day, we cannot (currently) make ends meet.

"But Alex is our player for this season and our captain. He is vital to our success. The club wants Alex here regardless of what transpires over the next few weeks.

"We are continuing to work on something where both parties feel whole. From there, we just want Alex in our group."

Although sources close to the player are playing down any move away from Barnsley, this would be a good signing for the Bluebirds. Alex Mowatt was highly rated when at Leeds United and many (including their supporters) were surprised to see him allowed to leave :thumbright:

Not sure if he slots straight into the number 10 role, but a good player with years of Championship experience.
Until he signs a new contract at Barnsley, teams will be interested.

Clubs linked with this player, no concrete offers made, not expected to move before transfer deadline. Sounds like his agent is trying to push for a new contract to me.

I just read West Ham are in for Sean Morrison and Grimes from the Jacks. It was in the daily Star though.
Knowing our transfer committee Morrison will go for peanuts.
