' Bob Wilson '

RIP Bob Wilson. Another City goalkeeper notes the dust. Just weeks after Fred Davies passed away. Bob will always be associated with the last minute mistake against Hamburg, but it’s often forgotten that he had been a top notch keeper before that fateful night. RIP Bluebird.

Keeper for my first ever match - City v Coventry season 66/67 - a few months before my 8th birthday. My Grandad, who took me to the game has a lot to answer for making me a liflelong fan! :bluescarf:

I still have nightmares about that Hamburg game. I console my self by realising that, had the away goals rule existed then, Hamburg would have won anyway. Was that City's greatest ever cup run considering our league status at the time?

RIP Bob Wilson

Not often do we say this but as a club are spoilt for choice. 1925, 1927 & 2008 FA Cup Finals, 2012 League Cup Final and the Cup Winners' Cup semi-final 1968.

Was the CWC run the best based on league standing? In 1968 we were in the second tier and the same was true for the 2008 and 2012 FA Cup & League Cup Finals.

I suppose it depends on which one is your favourite. I would go with 1968 because it was a unique achievement but in reality it has to be winning the FA Cup in 1927.

I might be mistaken but I seem to recall he was actually our second string keeper at the time as we had recently signed Fred Davies, but he was ineligible. He had performed heroics in the away game and in the replay in the quarter finals against Moscow Torpedo and we probably wouldn't have got that far without him, so its sad that everyone remembered that error. RIP.

Bob was city keeper when I first started my love affair with Ninian Park. Times being what they were, a lot of footballers had to have summer jobs to supplement their close season wages which were quite poor. One summer Bob was painting houses near where I lived and I used to go out of my way to walk past and have a chat to him. What a really nice guy he was and always had time to talk football. He did make a mistake in that Hamburg game, but if he hadn't kept Moscow Torpedo at bay single handed in the previous round, we wouldn't have been in the semi final.
I think your first couple of seasons supporting city are always the ones you look back as being the most exiting time, and Bob Wilson was part of that time for me. RIP Bob, and thanks.

That's really sad for a Bluebird legend to those of us lucky enough to see him play

RIP, the real Bob Wilson with condolences to your family and loved ones

I remember my late father, who watched the Hamburg game, telling me as a kid, about Bob Wilson and that game at Ninian Park. It’s history and folklore now, but Bob Wilson shall forever be a BLUEBIRD.... RIP Bob Wilson.
