" What is going on in the Premier League? "

Sun Oct 04, 2020 7:57 pm

Have teams suddenly forgotten how to defend?

Is the lack of fans making an impact?

Two more examples of shocking results and atrocious defending today.

Man Utd lost 6-1 at home to Tottenham.

Liverpool lost 7-2 away at Aston Villa.

Absolutely crazy.

It's bizarre. As you say, it's hard to make a case for the lack of fans to be the factor in everything.

I can't understand it because in the Championship there hasn't been anything on the same scale as these Premier League results. There's been more away wins than normal in the EFL, but the lack of fans does explain that.

In the Premier League, week after week there have been crazy results with loads of goals.

Just a very strange situation.

Whilst think villa would still have won tonight there was 3 or 4 deflected goals that would not have gone in without them deflected... doesn't explain other results since start season but does make for great viewing

I think it’s more to do with the lack of pre season and less time off. Teams have only had a short break since the last season finishing and during the lockdown break they weren’t able to train properly. From my understanding training is mostly used for defensive and tactics, shape and defensive formations for example. Teams have lost a lot of time that would have been defensive training.
Also a tired striker is more effective than a tired defender, defenders need to be switched on and running for a full 90mins whereas a striker only needs one 30 second burst of energy to score a goal. This is why we’re seeing a lot less clean sheets and a lot more goals.

Good post, and I tend to agree  It's like they are still working things out,but during a game now, rather than the training pitch.but it must be strange for the players, playing in front of just their team mates and a few other necessary people? :old: :bluebird:

It could also be down to the fact at the moment we have most of the best attacking managers and players in the world in the Premier league against some very average defences.

Most of the best defenders seem to be abroad for some reason . Look at Man utd yesterday . That defence is probably the worst I've seen from them in decades.

Or the vast amounts of money in the league has made it more competitive

Agreed and maybe teams are learning how to beat the high press, and high defensive line at last, deep runs at pace!

It is brilliant to watch, both the short pre season and the lack of fans for the bigger clubs, seems to be having a massive difference, and in ManU's case having a shit keeper and Manager that's not up to the job can't help!
