The National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) has confirmed officers are being told not to install the NHS Covid-19 app on their work smartphones.
The app detects when users have been in proximity to someone with the virus.
Some officers have also been told they may not need to obey self-isolate alerts generated by the app when downloaded to their personal phones.
Lancashire Constabulary has told staff to call the force's own Covid-19 helpline instead.
The BBC contacted the North-West of England force after a source claimed the advice had been given because of "security reasons".

The source also said officers had been told not to carry their personal phones while on duty if they had activated the app.
This applies to staff working in public-facing roles as well as those in back-office positions.
"The health and wellbeing of our officers, staff and the public remains our priority," a Lancashire Constabulary spokeswoman subsequently told the BBC.
"Members of staff, like all members of the public, are personally able to download the Track and Trace application should they choose to do so. Guidance provided to staff within the workplace remains in line with the national NPCC position."

The NPCC confirmed the work-phones policy was common to all forces, and said it was carrying out an urgent review of the matter.

"Police forces use a variety of mobile devices with different system restrictions," said a spokesman for the council.
"It is important that we have confidence that the NHS app will work for officers and staff consistently across the country, and it is for this reason that we have recommended that officers and staff download the app to their personal, as opposed to work devices, rather than any suggestion of security implications."
The NPCC might drop the policy as soon as Tuesday.

Can’t people see the double standards of the advice given ? It’s a god damn virus so why are there exemptions ? For me it says they are making up how serious this virus actually is.
Even Boris’s own Dad thinks what his son is telling us is complete buffonary. An SNP politician decides to travel across the country with this virus. According to what we are told she should be at home or in hospital dying from the worst virus to hit humanity ever !!
Remember back to March the chief medical advisor told the government what needs to happen and we all did only for him to break it themselves.
And they all get away with it by saying it was an error of judgment.
But even now you can walk around a supermarket with hundreds of others it’s ok but you ain’t allowed to meet family and friends. But you can if you go shooting.
People are so frightened they will believe anything even the absurd.
Wakey wakey you aren’t being sold the biggest hoax in generations

The police can't have the app for fook sake, how can they they come into contact with to many people you would have to many police quarantine and none on the streets, the press storing the crap again, you are right might be same as flue but when the numbers clash with people I'll in hospital with flue and covid 19 it's to many to deal with , don't people get it .it's all to do with the ability to deal with sheer numbers entering hospital ,it would be like a stampede,it's the potential unexpected numbers the government are trying to stop .

Hospitals are no where near full. In fact they are like a ghost town. Went recently to see a consultant and it was so quiet it was surreal.

so its not so dangerous for police but its other people { fookin :laughing5: :laughing5:
} not getting it... have another think eh..
its been extremely selective as to whats dangerous from day 1...a case here its close premises and everyone do 14 days...a case over there carry on and pretend it hasnt happened... its either dangerous or not.. as for hospitals its fckn criminal how many have and will die that were and are avoidable deaths while our hospitals were running at 30%
its our NHS NOT the national covid service..

Cancer, Heart attacks and road trafic accidents kill some, but others have a mild illness you can say that about anything, but none of them are the same.
