Neil Harris: 'We have to balance the books'

Since Jazz, seven players have gone and only one been bought and two loaned in, are we taking anything from that in terms of finances?

NH: That’s a fair question.

Someone said to me it’s 11 or 12 since, a couple of loans gone out as well, January and just the three coming in.

We understand the current climate, but I inherited a big squad. A competitive squad but a big squad.

We knew that we had to cut the squad and we all appreciated that. One of my first questions was about the size of the squad.

We have done that.

But when players leave we have to make sure we are competitive as well and have competition for places.

I’m really pleased with the players I’ve got but we have to make sure we have strength in depth and quality as well.

Funds-wise, what I will say is that Vincent [Tan] has supported this club hugely for many a year and continues to do so.

We are looking at options in all scenarios at the moment and we will have to see where that takes us in the next couple of weeks.

I’m not the sort of person who is going to go and spend someone else’s money on a whim without it being the right person.

We have to look at who is available but we have to balance the books as well. But adding one or two would be a nice finish to the window.

Better now or then?

Is the squad now better than the one that finished last season?

NEIL HARRIS:

NH: I think the players we have brought in are good players. Kieffer Moore’s qualities have been seen by players and supporters over a couple of years now.

I think the two younger lads, people are starting to see more of them and see they have qualities as well, but are inexperienced as well.

Are we as strong? Well, we’ve lost some players that were instrumental but we’ve also lost players who didn’t play a big part after lockdown.

I’d like to think we are as strong as we were last year. But the proof of the pudding is in winning games.

In my mind we are, I see the qualities every day. I never want to stand still though, so if it means we can add to the group and be better I’m all for that.

Sky Sports: that FFP has been stopped during this whole covid thing, allowing teams to spend what they want within reason

Neil Harris:

– Adomah 'on the radar' but not likely in this window
– Thinks squad is as strong now as end of last year.

not on there , i assume because the fee is undisclosed been quite a few of those.. 6 at Nottinham Forest alone along with three what they call free transfers but are actually players that deliberately run down their contracts to be in a stronger position to negotiate wages..

I just quickly over a break time cuppa went thorough some of the transfers.

I am not going to moan about the squad until the EFL window is over. The point i was trying to make is the 8 ~ 10 million pound transfers of last season have been halved or more.

I think there will be bargains out there over the next few weeks with good players being paid incentivised to leave, you just need to have enough of a battle fund to capture them.

I agree about the bargains and with 30+ million in parachute payments and a drastically reduced wage bill we are in a better position than most to compete for those bargains without hurting the finances further. But I think Tan wont gamble anymore. Whilst I don't blame him, I think he is missing a golden opportunity.

yes i understood , its just when it was pointed out NE was missing i then looked at Forest because i knew they had bought... the fees are nowhere like .. as for ourselves it mixed messages and who or how many get brought in could well be results dependent ? win its ok. lose bring 2 in type thing.. hope im wrong though win and strengthen would be the ideal obviously..

The transfer market doesn't close for a few weeks. I'm still hopeful that at least 2 players will come in!

We are looking thin on the ground and the lack of quality has been there since last season. Happy for the club to balance the books but we have to remain competitive. Harris has said a number of times he wants a few more players in so its Over to the club now to back him now. Think clubs will become desperate as the deadline approaches to get people off their books. Hopefully we can take advantage of that.

Apart from Mendez who was sacked ,all the players that have departed we’re reserve players, none were in the team that finished 5th and lost out to winners Fulham? We only need a top class replacement for Tomlin whose fitness is unreliable and another right back.We then will have 2 Senior players for every position and our Academy players as third choices to cover for injuries or loss of form! We should not fill our squad as previous managers have done with journeymen to sit in the stands taking millions from the club.As third choices our youngsters may have a chance then make the squad and perhaps even have a chance to play and hopefully to make a name for themselves?

I see your point about now is the time, but at what cost financially would be seen as an acceptable amount spent?
The worry would be splashing the cash,(as a few on here would like to see) and not getting promoted, as without the revenue generated by fans,it wil leave us in shit street, and next year could well be the death knell for some clubs,if as is likely, there will be no fans all season, thus pushing clubs to the brink, scientists are even saying thar with a vaccine in spring, doesn't mean back to normal.

I would go as far as saying without the fee of 36m in parachute payment,we could well of been one of those clubs,as we could lose out on anywhere between £ 3/500,00 for each home game played with no fans, that's a lot of money not coming in,it has to be made up somehow? Plus the sala case is due to be coming to an end,and if we lose, there is that 15m to find also.
Tough times, but not just for ccfc :sad7: :old: :bluebird:
