the football echo

i must admit..i do miss the old football echo on a saturday night...home games i would buy one in town after games and if i missed an away game i would wait outside the paper shop in penarth until delivered, with other people just as sad as me

birmingham, liverpool and manchester had good ones...i would sometimes get the glasgow one sent from a friend.

most of them had gone by 2000

If the City were away it was the highlight of the week for me when I was a kid. No wall to wall media coverage then so when that van arrived outside the newsagents it was your first real chance to get any info about the game.

OMG I absolutely loved the football echo. I'd often be at the newsagents or garage before the bundle of football echoes were dropped off. Such in depth match reports, and I'd study the league tables, results and attendances for ages. Those were the days ! :bluescarf:

There was always a reasonably full report on the first half but no doubt because of print deadlines the second half was usually summed up in a few words.

"And City conceded five quick goals after the interval"

Also loved seeing the local schools results from that morning in the paper.

I used to stare at the tables for hours, willing us to get out off relegation trouble most of the time (70s).

Ditto.. couldn’t wait for the pink.. still bought it into the 90s for essential tables viewing on a Saturday night.

Sold them round the pubs on a Saturday night for 8p. Always tried the old no 2p change to 10p with the drunks

has any team ever spent as many weeks in the relegation zone in one decade ? 72 stayed up by a point, 73 on GD, 74 needed a draw final game..75 relegated..76 promted...77 normal service resumed stayed up on GD..78 by a point...and then 79... all season looking as if it would be a normal nail biter but out of nowhere { well in the relegation zone on the back of 3 straight defeats } we go on that 11 game unbeaten run... looking back its a wonder as many stuck as did..

Best newspaper ever.

Loved it - an absolute necessity for a Saturday night. “Just popping out for the Pink and a pint....” :old:

Amazing how it was all put together so soon after the final whistle and put on street corners.

Sometimes it was being sold on the steps at bottom of Ponty train station when I got home if I missed the first train.

Likewise, though I don't think the attendances were published - those came with the " Sunday"s..

For away games, the Football Echo always mentioned how many we took, as in 'the five hundred City fans behind the goal'.

Except in the Sam days when sometimes he could "magically" predict what the crowd would be - especially if the game clashed with the egg ;) ;)

Used to love seeing the schools rugby results and your name if you scored a try.

And how many times was it late, and you'd wait and wait looking at your watch, until the van came round the corner.

I remember buying the Midlands edition after being released from the police station in Walsall. Came in handy next day hitch hiking at Frankley Services, absolutely bucketing it down and only dressed in
T-shirt and jeans.

One of the biggest disappointments of my life was when I scored my only ever goal for the school team (Glanyrafon) against Rhydypenau in a 3-0 away win, bought the football echo and found to my horror that the score was there but not the scorers. I could have cried.
