The Cheltenham Town verdict on Tom Sang
Here is what manager Michael Duff had to say about their new loan signing.
You have brought in Tom Sang from Cardiff. Tell us about him?
"We think he's a good player, first and foremost. He ticks a lot of boxes in terms of his profile. He's 6ft 1in, really good physicality, great energy, good legs and he can play in a number of positions as well. He came up on our radar when we played Cardiff before the play-offs, having conversations with Neil Harris and we had a watch of him then, played them again in pre-season and we liked what we saw. When he became available we jumped at the chance to take him."
He was at Manchester United. Were you aware of him during your time at Burnley?
"No, it's been two years since I left and we didn't come across Man United much at Burnley as we were cat 3 and then were cat 1. His profile is good and if you come through at Man United you can normally handle a football. But sometimes the other side of the game they are not so good at when they come from those clubs. They are often technically very sound, but they don't want to do the dirty stuff, but Tom seems to enjoy that. His energy and physicality, added in with the technical ability mean we think he'll be a good fit."
How useful will his experience at AFC Fylde be?
"When we take loans it's generally first time loans so there is always a bit more of a flip of the coin and you don't know how they are going to adapt to the environment. It doesn't mean they are always bad players if it doesn't work, but there is always a risk element. It alleviates a bit of the risk because Tom has been out and played first team football. He has been around Cardiff's first team for quite a few months now, so you don't sign what you believe to be a bad player, but he ticks a lot of the boxes in terms of what we are looking for: experience, technical ability, location, hunger. He wants to come here and play, proving his is good enough and that's something we want."
Is he in contention for Saturday?
"Yes, he'll be involved. I don' t know in what capacity yet because we haven't picked the team and they are coming off a good performance, but he'll be added into the mix."
